“Terrorist Sympathizer Tossed from Homeland Security Panel”
By Patrick Poole
FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/8/2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Abukar Arman admits that it has been a tough few weeks following a FrontPage exposé last month that examined his extensive online writings in defense of terrorist organizations and individuals, all while he sat on the blue-ribbon Franklin County Criminal Justice Planning Board that oversees Central Ohio Homeland Security programs (Hometown Jihad: The Somali Terror Apologist Next Door).
As a direct result of that report, Arman was forced to resign last Friday from the Planning Board after officials discovered that as a non-US citizen he wasnt eligible to be on the board; and in a curiously-timed bureaucratic move, he also lost his Columbus Public Schools adult education job after they discovered that he hadnt kept up his teaching credentials and the grant funding his position suddenly disappeared. A CPS spokesman said the move had absolutely nothing to do with the FrontPage report though these events occurred immediately after it was published, though Arman told a local paper that he believed the FrontPage story had everything to do with his present woes.”

“Terrorists teaming with drug cartels”
By Sara A. Carter
August 8, 2007
Islamic extremists embedded in the United States posing as Hispanic nationals are partnering with violent Mexican drug gangs to finance terror networks in the Middle East, according to a Drug Enforcement Administration report.
“Since drug traffickers and terrorists operate in a clandestine environment, both groups utilize similar methodologies to function ... all lend themselves to facilitation and are among the essential elements that may contribute to the successful conclusion of a catastrophic event by terrorists,” said the confidential report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times.
The 2005 report outlines an ongoing scheme in which multiple Middle Eastern drug-trafficking and terrorist cells operating in the U.S. fund terror networks overseas, aided by established Mexican cartels with highly sophisticated trafficking routes.”

Treasury Designates Al-Salah Society
Key Support Node for Hamas
The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated the Al-Salah Society, one of the largest and best-funded Hamas charitable organizations in the Palestinian territories. Al-Salah Society’s director, Ahmad Al-Kurd, was also designated today.
“Hamas has used the Al-Salah Society, as it has many other charitable fronts, to finance its terrorist agenda,” said Adam Szubin, Director of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). “Today’s action alerts the world to the true nature of Al-Salah and cuts it off from the U.S. financial system.”
The Al-Salah Society supported Hamas-affiliated combatants during the first Intifada and recruited and indoctrinated youth to support Hamas’s activities. It also financed commercial stores, kindergartens, and the purchase of land for Hamas. One of the most senior Gaza-based Hamas leaders and founders, Ismail Abu Shanab, openly identified the Al-Salah Society as “one of the three Islamic charities that form Hamas’ welfare arm.” The Al-Salah Society has received substantial funding from Persian Gulf countries, including at least hundreds of thousands of dollars from Kuwaiti donors.
The Al-Salah Society is directed by Ahmad Al-Kurd, a recognized high-ranking Hamas leader in Gaza. Al-Kurd’s affiliation with Hamas goes back over a decade. During the first Intifada, Al-Kurd served as a Hamas Shura Council member in Gaza. As of late 2003, Al-Kurd was allegedly the top Hamas leader in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza. Since mid-2005, he has served as the mayor of Deir Al-Balah, elected as a Hamas candidate.
The Al-Salah Society has employed a number of Hamas military wing members. In late 2002, an official of the Al-Salah Society in Gaza was the principal leader of a Hamas military wing structure in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza. The founder and former director of the Al-Salah Society’s Al-Maghazi branch reportedly also operated as a member of the Hamas military wing structure in Al-Maghazi, participated in weapons deals, and served as a liaison to the rest of the Hamas structure in Al-Maghazi. At least four other Hamas military wing members in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza were tied to the Al-Salah Society.
The Al-Salah Society was included on a list of suspected Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad-affiliated NGOs whose accounts were frozen by the Palestinian Authority as of late August 2003. After freezing the bank accounts, PA officials confirmed that the Al-Salah Society was a front for Hamas.

Six suspected terrorists detained, one terrorist killed in Coalition raids
Aug. 8, 2007
Release A070808a
Six suspected terrorists detained, one terrorist killed in Coalition raids
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition Forces detained six suspected terrorists and killed one terrorist during operations Tuesday and Wednesday targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq and its associates in central Baghdad and Kirkuk.
Northeast of Samarra, Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists during a precision raid Tuesday. The targeted individual of the raid was the al-Qaeda in Iraq military emir of Samarra. The three individuals were detained for their association with the targeted al-Qaeda in Iraq emir.
During an early morning raid north of Tikrit Wednesday, Coalition Forces detained two suspected terrorists for their ties to an al-Qaeda in Iraq key leader. Intelligence reports indicate that the targeted individual of the Wednesday raid is a key al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in Bayji who oversees a cell of approximately 400 terrorists and is linked to numerous attacks on Coalition Forces.
Iraqi and Coalition Forces targeted an al-Qaeda in Iraq Mosul-based emir who assists with terrorist operations in Kirkuk Wednesday morning. While Coalition Forces were on the targeted location two individuals were observed rapidly maneuvering towards the assault force providing perimeter security on the target. Responding appropriately to the immediate threat, Coalition Forces engaged the two men, wounding both. Both individuals were taken to a military medical facility for treatment where one later died. The terrorist who later died at the military medical facility was positively identified as the targeted individual.
Our operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq are progressively dismantling and destroying the terrorist network, said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “We will continue to attack al-Qaeda at the current fast and steady pace.”

Worldwide Caution Public Announcement
U.S. Embassy Tbilisi released the following Warden Message on August 7:
Media sources have reported that a missile was fired from an aircraft and landed without exploding near the village of Tsitelubani, near Gori, on the night of August 6-7. At this time, there does not appear to be any danger posed to U.S. citizens in Georgia due to this incident. The U.S. Embassy would, however, like to remind American citizens that due to the volatility of the political situation and high levels of crime in the separatist areas, the U.S. Embassy advises American citizens not to travel to Abkhazia or to South Ossetia. Because of the restricted access of U.S. officials to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the ability of the U.S. Government to assist American citizens in these regions is extremely limited, even in emergencies.

August 8, 2007 - 4:22pm
WASHINGTON- Three Red Line Metro stations are closed because of a suspicious package.
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Dupont Circle was the first station to close shortly before 3 p.m. after a suspicious brown box was found on a red line train headed to Glenmont.
Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato says the stations at Woodley Park and Cleveland Park also had to be closed so that trains can turn around at Van Ness.
Asato says that as of 4 p.m., bomb technicians were preparing to X-ray the package.
Metro is providing shuttle bus service around between Farragut North and Van Ness.
Meanwhile Virginia Railway Express is experiencing a minimum of 30-minute delays Wednesday afternoon after a power line became severed.
A contractor for a gas company severed a power line along the railroad track around 3:30 p.m., spokesman Mark Roeber says.
