Viewed from a machiavellian perspective, this was a clever tactical move. It doesn't help improve the quality of the political debate one iota...
I disagree. The rats themselves have made character a central issue in this election, claiming that the President is an evil liar who conspired to take us into an unnecessary war. I would say that in the present political context, questions of character are central to the ongoing political debate in this country.

Well, Senator Dodd didn't want the passages read to him by Imus. You've done a better job of defending Webb than Dodd, by the way.

IMHO, without homosexual Republicans in WA, most conservatives would NEVER have ever had an inkling as to how truly perverse the Democrat party is. Liberals began the "war on the American culture" back many years ago.

Dittos in re pro-American females entering the leagues of the feminists -- and uncovering what the genuine agenda of "feminism" is and was.

Some natter that all politics is dirty, while they overlook the crap they peddle in their own lives -- malicious gossip, deeds and behaviors they think no one has observed.

Politics ain't corrupt any more than the average citizen. We have a representative government fighting a WOT and a cultural war waged by liberals.

Republicans are FAR better than the Democrats. Smarter, too.

We can have the "smiling face" Democrats controlling us by every action and law imaginable, or we can have reality warriors, the Republicans.

I'm voting straight Republican.

Interesting reading some comments with regard to Webb.

Defending this in any circumstance is truly evil.

What kind of person would thnk like this or defend publishing such thoughts.

We live in frightening times and need to be more vigilant than ever with our children.

Dodd was defending Webb?

Yeah he was on Imus this morning... he refused to let Imus read him the quotes, didn't want to hear it... but of course Dodd was all upset that the campaign wasn't about issues.... like maccaca, or allen being a J0000000000, or whatever other storylines the post was running since mid-september.

Having read through most of this thread and having heard passages from this book, I have to say to those Freepers who condemn or lament this as dirty campaigning, are you kidding me?

To begin with, the writer of this smut does not belong in the Senate. Second off, after the dems sat there and dared, dared to complain about Foley (neverminding Barney Frank and Studds). Well, the difference between the Republicans and dems is that Foley is gone and Webb is getting the full support of the democrat party and then some. Hell, this book is probably endearing him even more.

I just can't wait to see how the MSM covers this. I know Fox will cover it, especially since O'Reilly is so hot on protecting children. I betcha the rest of the MSM gives it the "no fair, dirty politics" treatment.

"Do you know if newspapers carried this story?"

I make it a habit refrain from reading the lamestream media newspapers in Virginia, so most of the time I wouldn't be able to tell you.

I just checked. Holding my nose all the while.

The short answer: no. The longer answer: one newspaper was spending it's ink endorsing Mr. Webb. Another is running an article about Mr. Webb lashing out at Sen. Allen's advertisments. The third is reporting that Mr. Webb has raised more money than Sen. Allen this month. And the fourth is running a story about how Mr. Webb is attracting large crowds. In fairness, the fourth paper also ran an article about Sen. Allen visiting a city in the same area.

Thank you for helping demonstrate (again) that any time spent reading the major Virginia newspapers is wasted time.

I checked the AP headlines and USA Today headlines on the internet for this Webb writing story, and geez you'll never believe this but this huge story is not in their headlines. I have no idea how they could have missed this story, but it must have been an oversight. Yeah, that's the ticket, it was just an oversight and they'll cover it later. I know they will, the MSM is so diligent about covering negative stories about Democrat candidates.

"If I run for congress, first thing to look at is how I made my living. Carpenter, blacksmith, pornographic writer, whatever."

It's not as if Mr. Webb can say that he didn't say these things. They're in books that he authored. Keep in mind, however, that our lamestream media here in Virginia will refrain from repeating this. To the extent that they report at all, it'll be in the context of "Senator Allen's horrible mud-slinging accusations."

"The DUers are saying this story has been "debunked" because putting your mouth on a child's penis is a "cultural tradition" in Vietnam. I would love to see Webb take the microphone on defend this stuff using that logic."

I'm sure its a cultural tradition in the homes of most DUhers. Does anyone doubt for a SECOND these hypocritical morons would be acting like Allen was Michael Jackson if it was he who wrote those kind of passages?

I am not sure what is so offenseive about my post.

On the whole Vietnamese scene out of the book it appears that it COULD be a sociology as one poster pointed out. Before I call a veteran a pervert and someone that is demented I want to get the facts straight. Even if he is a democrat that I want to see defeated. I think that represents my faith well.

I have never read any of his books as several people here have. I think I mention that onje has too look at the context of these and the character.

If I was a reporter, the first thing I would do is ask the First Lady about this and get her reaction. Especially since she is a Librarian, school teacher , well read, and holds the White House Book Fair. I dont know her answer but people might be shocked if it is a tad different than most on here. AGAIN PANDORAS BOX HERE Doesnt mean she is a perv.

It doesn't matter if this event actually happened. It still gives us a sense of what Webb considers to be important and worthy of putting into his books.

As a practicing and believing Catholic, Webb's writings are disturbing to me to say the least. Especially for someone running for high office.

There are trolls on this thread forum lately with the sole purpose of trying to salvage Webb's sinking titanic defeat the rebublican party in the coming election.

Have you EVER seen so many new posters and also sleepers from 1998-99 on FR? I think we should start hitting the abuse button.

Maybe the dems will stand up and applaud this creep... they did that for Studds - the man who actually was boinking 17 year old boy pages... Wonder how the MSM would treat this if a Republican wrote this stuff?
