Its the question of the decade if not the question of the century: Why is there such a disconnect between the political class and the people of the United States on the issue of illegal immigration? The easy answers are that Republicans want cheap labor for their big-business contributors and Democrats see a near-limitless source of new votes.
Conventional wisdom rarely goes beyond that point, but really, labor and votes are mere surface issues. To some extent, and perhaps even unconsciously, our political elites seem to feel that many of their problems -- stuff like the recent Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal -- are really the fault of their constituents. Those darned voters sometimes organize, write letters, go on the blogs, and complain about high taxes -- sometimes they even vote a politician out of office. The nerve!
Perhaps a better class of constituents could be found that in time might begin to replace the whiners that our officials have to deal with now. You know -- a new type of voter that could be shaped into a perfect constituent that would never demand term limits or open government.
Thats the conclusion of Fredo Arias-King, who met privately with at least 80 members of Congress while handling public relations for then-candidate Vicente Fox in 1999 and 2000. The Harvard-educated Arias-King made 14 trips to the United States for Fox and attended both of the American political conventions. He says 90 percent of the officials that he spoke to wanted big increases in immigration. A few, he says, disparaged their white constituents calling them rednecks and apologizing for their views on immigration.

Yeah. We can protect the North/South Korean border but not our own. What's worse is that we don't even TRY, and we don't let the INS do their jobs!
As that "punk" told Dirty Harry: I's gots to know. What happened?
Lets pray it is so!
I would like to see this get down to the small contractors who, for example, contract to mow your grass. Many people are cutting out Americans by hiring illegals.
Excellent post!
btt
It would be my bet that there are way more cameras at red lights in America than on the border.
Of course, an illegal alien wandering across the desert doesn't have any money, so it's useless to fine them.
Which basically proves what many have said all along, that politicians are basically prostitutes, but at least with real prostitutes you get what you pay for...
As that "punk" told Dirty Harry: I's gots to know. What happened'?
Very well said and I agree with all your views with this caveat: Both parties are bad but at least the Republicans have some who realize what's going on.
If the Republicans don't nominate a conservative in the Reagan tradition in '08, I'm going to write-in Tancredo.
Re' your post #40 - all true until you agreed that Buchanan was a bigot against Jews. This has been a classic case of a lie repeated so much that it is regarded as truth. From what I recall is that he said the U.S. shouldn't put its interests before Israel's, at which point everyone else in the media circus screamed that he was some sort of Nazi.
Anyone out there have any written evidence of Buchanan's anti-Semitism? Anyone? And poor Dane's ruminations on carbon monoxide don't count.
I truly believe it' all part of a smear campaign to shut up people who dare to speak the truth.
You should try reading his columns since Israel was forced to defend itself from Islamic terrorists hiding in Lebanon. It would erase any doubts a reasonable person might have.
Correction: He said that we should look after our interests before Israel's. How anyone could misconstrue such a statement as being anti-Jew and totally disregard basic patriotism and loyalty for America over another nation as proof of bigotry is beyond me.
I read them and recognized the devil's advocate style that they were written. I thought Buchanan made that plain in the preface and last paragraphs.
Sorry...just disregard his articles.
Ya, that is what must be driving the dynamics of this issue. Whatever. One downside of the internet is the amount of garbage out there whose noisome airs are facilitated by being given wider play. The ying and the yang. But I don't mind. The American public overall has more common sense than this reveals. They will get it more nearly right in the end, than pundits seeking some grand unified theory to foster their agenda, sometimes one not fully revealed.
I'll expand that I read most of those and found the content more along the lines of questioning our involvement in Middle East issues while our government rushes to intervene without thorough analysis or the costs of Islamic repercussions. Nowhere did I see any anti-Israel sentiments, just criticism of how their knee-jerk/no compromise responses sometimes works against them because of their predictability.
And what did pat buchanan's article in response talk about? How we (the United States, not Israel) had killed innocent women and children in Pakistan and no wonder they hate us. He NEVER ONCE mentioned the that the target was known terrorists and that we had killed them.
About the only thing/person buchanan dislikes more then Israel is our President.
Our officials seem to think Latinos will be easily controlled. They must think they'll live in their gated communities protected from the growing crime.
If you're right about Pat hating Jews should I consider everything else he's written as "tainted"? His latest book is nothing but common sense (so little practiced these days) and his "Death of the West" turned out to be prophetic.
I agree that the man needs an editor to curtail his passionate tirades made without thinking everything through. I wish I still had that fire but rational evaluation will have to suffice. Good luck on getting those illegal criminals relabeled as legals.
Passionate tirades? For the past six years he had continually defended Islamic terrorists while condemning this country, and Israel, as the cause. And folks wonder why President Reagan fired him.
