WASHINGTON -- Quietly leaving his post as surgeon general, Dr. Richard Carmona said he would judge himself successful if he had persuaded one student to make good health choices or one mother to stop smoking.

Carmona's report condemning secondhand smoke was a hallmark of his tenure as the nation's 17th surgeon general.

They must continue to think they are causing no harm to their own bodies or their childrens bodies,

You are harming your kids by making their immune systems weak by not exposing them to smoke.

LOL! Yeah, they have already told me that. I kept them too clean too. They were only allowed to sleep with dogs and cats. They had to play with the pig and the goat outside and they were only allowed to make mudpies after school, not before. I was a bad mother.

You must think you're really cute. Unfortuantely this is serious business. If you love your kids, you don't smoke around them. End of story.

"But where does this Taliban-like anti-smoking campaign come from? It can't really be this stuff about second-hand smoke. ...... who can object?"

I wrote a post a while back attempting to answer that same question.

"The agenda of the pro-smoking ban activists is to stop smokers from smoking...because smoking MAY be hazardous to the smokers' health. A noble cause when it was conducted through voluntary education and marketing. Smoking bans on the other hand are coercive, collusive, and frankly bordering on racketeering in my opinion." more here:

You don't know what you're talking about. Retake basic statistics. In 116,000 women, a 32% increase in a common disease like breast cancer is statistically significant. That's why the sample size is so large.

Actually, I do know what I am talking about.....I was trying to give you an out to avoid embarrassing yourself.

There was no 32% increase in breast cancer, but rather a 32% increase of RISK of breast cancer in the 116,000 women surveyed.........your own link even states it my way, not yours.

Now, would you care to discuss what "statistically significant" means when it comes ot epidemiology, or do you just wish to continue along with the bias against tobacco?

BTW - you didn't answer my question - care to do so?????

The one thing that galls me about the Surgeon General post is they allow these idiots to wear an Admirals uniform.

Honest to god, the first time I saw The Pirates of Penzance, I thought the Major General was Edward Koop.

"What about the moist wheezing that comes with age? The yellowed fingers? The inevitable oxygen tank? Are those turn-ons as well?

I don't know ANY smoker like that. NO one!"

Not looking very far are you? I didn't have an oxygen tank but I most certainly had the yellow fingers (about 1 pack a day) and the wheezing, plus every time allergies or a cold hit, I coughed and hacked for weeks. All are gone since I quit smoking. I still have some of the pollen allergy hits (although not nearly as bad) but I don't go on hacking like I did.

I know many others with the same history.

"These smokers are in deep denial. They must continue to think they are causing no harm to their own bodies or their childrens bodies, otherwise they would have to stop and they don't want to stop."

You're right, of course. I have absolutely no problem with their belief that second-hand smoke MIGHT do no harm, but any rational person knows that it MIGHT do harm. So why take a chance with your kids when it's so very easy to avoid it? Don't smoke inside your home and don't smoke in your car when the kids are riding. I don't avoid ALL places with smoke -- my kids have always come to the bowling alley, which sometimes is almost blue with smoke. But that's very infrequent.

The answer is either that they don't want to be inconvenienced or they can't do it because that might go aganist their agenda. Sad.

I think that it is rare to have a Surgeon General which we here all like.

I consider this guy a success just from the standpoint that I had absolutely no clue who he was until today. He had very little mainstream breakthrough, therefore, a small influence on our nation via pop culture.

Much smaller than C. Everett Poopyhead and Jocelyn "Clapner" Edwards whom are the only two I can name off the top of my head and are therefore, the two worst in history.

The following are emails I have received from this Surgeon General you think so much of......??

"I think he was in a tough time," Benjamin said. "Here you have a guy who had significant experiences in preparedness and trauma and emergency care, and I wish we had used him more effectively in that role."

So, he could have prevented the thousands of people who died in hurricanes last year but chose not to????

Seriously, if that's his area of expertise, it was HIS job to use himself "more effectively in that role",
not wait for someone else to suggest it.

Yet another black mark on his record which someone will consider an "accomplishment".

Below is the Washington Post news report that US Surgeon General Carmona's term has expired and he has not been offered a renewed appointment for this "prestigious" post. It appears, after a lackluster performance for four years, which he hi-lighted recently by publicly misrepresenting his Smoking Report, containing the disorganized compilation of Tobacco Control doubtful scientific studies on the health effects from SHS for the last 20 years.

Following upon wide-spread disasters in this country, and particularly after wide-spread hurricanes and flooding in Florida and New Orleans, perhaps Dr. Carmona should have cited other constructive accomplishments to justify his official term:

"He cited several accomplishments in the letter, including educating Americans about the importance of preparing for natural and manmade disasters. He also noted his focus on trying to eliminate health disparities among parts of the population on such diseases as AIDS or diabetes."

I am curious what constructive purpose our appointed Surgeon General position is even supposed to represent in the USA now, and why HHS felt it appropriate to initially appointed a biased and publicly avowed proponent of tobacco prohibition? Sure sounds like placing the fox right in the hen house and then authorizing any destructive results as legal activities...while taxpayers still pay the bills.

Nice. Too late for my liking!
May he rot in Hell!

What is second hand smoke? Is it the unfiltered smoke off the end of the cigarette or the exhaled smoke of the smoker?

Neither is good for anyone but unfiltered smoke has to be the worst.

Oak Ridge Labs, TN & SECOND HAND SMOKE

I think any anti who tries to dismiss the findings of the U.S. Department of Energy labs at Oak Ridge, should be confronted with the question: "Are you saying that DOE researchers committed scientific fraud and that their findings on ETS exposure are untrue?"

Then you'd be wrong. I have no idea why the plastic poster in your doctor's office didn't list smoking as a risk factor, but the American Cancer Society, the American Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Institutes of Health all list smoking as one of the leading risk factors for breast cancer.

~sigh.................

RESEARCHERS BLAST CALIFORNIA EPA REPORT: SECONDHAND SMOKE FINDINGS BIASED, FLAWED

01/30/2006-The American Cancer Society stated unequivocally, in a written comment, that it did not agree with Cal-EPA's conclusion that secondhand smoke was a cause of breast cancer, and that published evidence did not support the requisite criteria for causation.

I hope you're independently wealthy, because I don't want to have to pay for your healthcare. Nor do I want my insurance premiums to go up because of your personal weakness and irresponsibility.

You are another one that has been easily swayed.  And oh yes!  I pay my own health care thank you.  If I get sick, NO one will have to pay for ME, and that's a fact!

However...............explain this:

Funny, smoking rates have dropped dramatically while health care costs have risen dramatically at the same time. It seems to me that the correlation PROVES that a lack of smokers causes higher health care costs!
