Surgeon General Carmona Leaves Post (Dancing in the streets alert!)
United Pro Smoker's Newsletter ^ | uly 31, 2006 | KEVIN FREKING

WASHINGTON -- Quietly leaving his post as surgeon general, Dr. Richard Carmona said he would judge himself successful if he had persuaded one student to make good health choices or one mother to stop smoking.

Carmona's report condemning secondhand smoke was a hallmark of his tenure as the nation's 17th surgeon general.

What about the moist wheezing that comes with age? The yellowed fingers? The inevitable oxygen tank? Are those turn-ons as well?

Age can bring on wheezing in non-smokers. What yellow fingers? What inevitable oxygen tank?

I understand SheLion's turn on of a clean smelling man with that hint of tobacco, but I'm slightly different, while that is a turn on, a bigger turn on to me is the scent of a man who is willing to be a man and is not afraid of manual labor.

As my husband is also a FReeper, and She Lion is the widow of another FReeper, I will refrain from detailing my reaction to my husband after he or both of us come in the house for a break from work outside.

And hopefully it won't become an issue in your life. But by smoking, you have gravely jeopardized your own health, vastly increasing your risk for decades to come for a wide variety of conditions. I do hope you have quit, but you are already at a much increased risk.

I appreciate your concern, but when my time is up, it won't matter one iota if I ever smoked or not.  Smoking is my only vice and I LOVE it!

I'm not sure I know the answer. But the link between breast cancer and tobacco use is firm. This excellent study of 116,000 women found a 32% increase in breast cancer rates among smokers. If you want links to other studies, I'd be happy to provide them.

I just did! Check out my post #159!

RESEARCHERS BLAST CALIFORNIA EPA REPORT: SECONDHAND SMOKE FINDINGS BIASED, FLAWED

01/30/2006-The American Cancer Society stated unequivocally, in a written comment,  that it did not agree with Cal-EPA's conclusion that secondhand smoke was a cause of breast cancer, and that published evidence did not support the requisite criteria for causation.

....study of 116,000 women found a 32% increase in breast cancer rates among smokers.

A 32% increase is statistically insignificant. To achieve statistical significance the % increase must be between 200% and 300%.

Let me ask you a question: Which would you find more scary: exposure/consumption to a substance that has a 19% increase of risk for a disease or a 65% increase for the same disease?????

Please remember my original statement about statistical significance.

I think that it is rare to have a Surgeon General which we here all like.

I consider this guy a success just from the standpoint that I had absolutely no clue who he was until today. He had very little mainstream breakthrough, therefore, a small influence on our nation via pop culture.

Much smaller than C. Everett Poopyhead and Jocelyn "Clapner" Edwards whom are the only two I can name off the top of my head and are therefore, the two worst in history.

To me, there is nothing better then a sweet smelling man with the smell of after shave and a hint of tobacco smoke.

There's no such thing as a hint of tobacco smoke. It's more like kissing an ashtray.

The one thing that galls me about the Surgeon General post is they allow these idiots to wear an Admirals uniform. These people have never been in the navy, yet they not only get to wear that uniform but they have all those ribbons. What the hell are those ribbons for if they never served!?

The Federal Public Health Service is a uniformed service. And the SG is a Vice Admiral.

(And he probably got his ribbons from his prior service in VN)

"Interesting chart but 0 is still way better and even healthier than 20."

"Now show the chart that proves 2nd hand smoke isn't inconsiderate, disgusting, doesn't make eyes burn, doesn't make you cough, even gag, doesn't make your (non-smoker) clothes stink...."

This very argument exemplifies the reason that tobacco control exaggerates and lies about secondhand smoke.....they know lawmakers would never pass laws and ordinances based on the argument "..we want a smoking ban so my clothes don't stink...."

However, now that we have air quality testing which contradicts their health hazard argument....all that's left for them is the nuisance argument......Good luck with that

Well, maybe that's the motivation of the poster, but the real problem is that he was promoting the junk science of second-hand smoke.

What is second hand smoke? Is it the unfiltered smoke off the end of the cigarette or the exhaled smoke of the smoker?

Neither is good for anyone but unfiltered smoke has to be the worst.

Therefore, I must conclude that smoking is certainly a lesser risk (for breast cancer) than obesity and smoking doesn't make much difference in comparison to non-lifestyle factors like age of beginning and cessation of menses and breast cancer in family members.

Then you'd be wrong. I have no idea why the plastic poster in your doctor's office didn't list smoking as a risk factor, but the American Cancer Society, the American Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Institutes of Health all list smoking as one of the leading risk factors for breast cancer.

Ignore them at your peril.

I hope you're independently wealthy, because I don't want to have to pay for your healthcare. Nor do I want my insurance premiums to go up because of your personal weakness and irresponsibility.

The study I posted discusses the link between FIRST-hand smoke and breast cancer. SheLion, you must be the only person on the planet who still believes that smoking doesn't cause you to die a horrible death.

You don't know what you're talking about. Retake basic statistics. In 116,000 women, a 32% increase in a common disease like breast cancer is statistically significant. That's why the sample size is so large.

These smokers are in deep denial. They must continue to think they are causing no harm to their own bodies or their childrens bodies, otherwise they would have to stop and they don't want to stop. There are other freepers I can talk to, so I am out of here. Bye, keep up the good work.
