A man was charged with burglary and criminal mischief Thursday after he allegedly broke into a funeral home and fell asleep in a coffin.
Joel Fish, 20, of Queensbury, was arrested after he was discovered at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton, 127 miles north of Syracuse.
Debra White, wife of the home's funeral director Joe White, said she noticed a broken window and open door to the casket display room when she awoke at 6:30 a.m. Inside, she saw a boot and pair of pants on the floor and a pair of knees sticking out of a stainless steel coffin.
Fish, who police said was intoxicated, was treated at Canton-Potsdam hospital for cuts. He was arraigned and released to return to court at a later date.
The funeral home estimates the damage from the burglary, mostly to the coffin, at $4,000.
______________
Full retail, of course.
You break it, you bought it. At least he's got the coffin thing covered for later when he might need it.
He was really "dead tired"....lol
Coulda been worse... He coulda fallen asleep on the embalming table.
Sounds like an ideal, long term, resting place for my restless legs syndrome.
Story for a chuckle...
When I was 17, I was hired to babysit.
The family owned a funeral home and they lived on the top floor of the business.
The wife was out and the husband was working downstairs. I had the children in the upstairs home of the building.
Approx 11:30pm, the children were long asleep, the husband came up and told me he was just finishing up his work and I could leave.
Strange man, didn't wait to walk me out, just left.
I gathered my things and tried to go out through the back. I went down too many flights of stairs and ended up smack in the middle of his lab with his work laying on the table.
I have absolutely no memory of me leaving that position, driving my car, or ending up back at my home.
Needless to say, I never babysat for them again :P
Police take such crimes seriously. Coffin sleeping is a grave offense.
I'm not dead yet!
What's he supposed to do? They don't have hotels for travelling vampires.
What a deadbeat. He dug his own grave, now he has to lay in it ;)
". . . of Queensbury, was arrested after he was discovered . . . in Canton, 127 miles north of Syracuse."
If this guy is from Queensbury, NY, that is a hell of a long way away from Canton, NY. Q'bury almost borders the Hudson.
Give me a pine box, if my survivors have the misfortune that remains requiring disposal are left. (Unless murder is suspected and someone wants evidence preserved, or the like... :-)
I wonder if he was found lying belly-up!
Reminds me of what George Armstrong Custer did to a trooper who was found passed-out-drunk on guard duty. He was dumped into a coffin and as they nailed the lid shut... he awoke to hear Custer reading from the bible.
$4,000.00 coffin that must be gold plated.
I used to babysit for the owners of a funeral home. The business wasn't in the same building but all their furniture was used from the funeral home and sort of creepy. And the book shelf was full of stuff associated with teh industry. It was sort of creepy. A good friend of mine (75) grew up in the apartment over his father's funeral home business and he has some great stories.
My money says he passed out and urinated on himself in the coffin.
