UNITED 93 FReeper Reviews
self | April 28, 2006 | RobFromGa

Just saw United 93-- I thought it was excellent. It evolves in real-time and its cuts back and forth between the Air Traffic controllers, the Military room, and the plane.

It was somewhat shocking to watch the level of confusion in terms of what was going on, but when you see what information that they were dealing with, it makes sense.

The hijackers to me came across more as fanatical than evil, and they were not turban-wearing obvious characters, they were cleaned up and I ride on planes with people like them on every flight I take.

In the movie, they are carrying out the plans of others and are obsessive in their task. We are not fighting an enemy that is likely to be reasoned with.

There is one character that I'm glad they included- he has a European *maybe French* accent and he makes a number of comments along the lines of "If we do what they say, they'll spare our lives"-- typical appeasement mentality.

Thanks to this group of heroes, many thousands of lives may have been spared and we kept the Islamic nuts from claiming the Capitol or White House as a prize.

I give in 9.5/10!

Would you have been less likely to see the movie if there were a true-life gay couple who were among the heroes?

I felt this too, wondering if my blood pressure would ever return to normal.

You mean the "where the hell is the plane" stuff? I thought it just highlight the catastrophic nature of the crash. The plane hit the ground at a tremendous speed. I think it almost nose dived in.

I think that it crashed over an old mine site, which would enable it to go far into the ground on impact. Has anyone else ever read this?

Friday evening I saw 'United 93,' the riveting film about the heroic crew and passengers of the fourth plane hijacked on September 11, 2001. I heartily urge everyone to see this movie. It's worth every penny of admission. More to the point, the emotional discomfort some might feel sitting in a dark theater watching events unfold on film is nowhere near the horror the 40 passengers and crew experienced that morning.

Shot in a spare, near-documentary style, with almost no background music, this is one of the most remarkable films made by Hollywood since the end of its Golden Era. It brings the viewer into the control tower, military command center and FAA command center, as well as on the plane itself. The perspective is as though you are an inside observer in the various control rooms, and nearly a participant on the plane.

The movie is a work of fiction that does take some small creative license here and there (particularly since no one knows for certain exactly what happened onboard), but it focuses very tightly on the plane and command/control centers, and uses phone and in-flight recorder transcripts, results of investigations, and other real-world material to tell the story as accurately as possible. The film is non-political.

One small bit of creative license used in the film is this: One of the hijackers clips a photo of the U.S. Capitol building to the steering yoke in the cockpit. In fact, we do not know for certain if their primary target was the Capitol or the White House. It is believed one was the primary, and one was the backup target, but the available evidence conflicts as to which was which. In the end, it really doesn't matter. Why? If that plane had been able to strike either one of those buildings, the result for our nation and the world at large would have been catastrophic.

Congress was in session that morning, and the First Lady was among those in the Capitol building. Neither she nor the congressional leadership were immediately evacuated.

At the White House, although the President and some of his domestic aides were in Florida, the Vice President and most of the senior staff were at work along with hundreds of other people who work at the WH complex. Because the VP chose to stay in the PEOC underneath the WH, the complex was never fully evacuated that morning.

Thanks to the heroes of Flight 93, a national atrocity of immense proportions was averted. What did happen to them and thousands of others that day was horrific enough, but the heroes of 93 prevented something even worse, the near total decapitation of our government. Can you imagine the effect on our President if that plane had hit the Capitol with the First Lady inside?

I thank God for the crew and passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, and will love them forever even though I never met any of them.

In my opinion, every American owes it to them to see this film. Spending a couple of hours in a movie theater is nothing compared to what they suffered. They gave us an immense, immeasurable gift. We surely can give them a couple of hours in a theater. What courage does that take? None, and if we aren't capable even of that, we aren't capable of dealing with what might come our way some day at the hands of the Islamofacist monsters.

May the crew and passengers of Flight 93 rest in the loving arms of the Lord forever. (Obviously, when I refer to the passengers, the Islamofacist scum are totally excluded.)

I would have been less likely to watch if a "gay couple" and their lifestyle had been the focus of the movie. As it was presented, the movie was about how a group of Americans (black, white, yellow, etc. with no concern for sexual habits) acted as heroes on that day.

Also, contrary to normal Hollywood values, I was very pleasantly surprised to see the Lord's Prayer was given as much prominence as it was. The murderous terrorists prayed for destruction which they received, yet I have no doubt they now regret it. The passengers prayed for the strength to save themselves and others and though they died, they saved others from destruction.

There was a stark contrast between the terrorists and the heroes. Allah, god of destruction in opposition to our heavenly Father and Jesus, God of Salvation. That scene, a rarity in today's movies, gives me even more reason to recommend this movie to others.

One good thing about A&E's movie, "Flight 93" was between Todd Beamer and GTE supervisor, Lisa D. Jefferson, when they recited the Lord's Prayer. That was very, very touching...

You all remember the Palestinians "celebrating" after WTC was attacked?

Here's a link to CNN's coverage of it...

You will need Window's Media Player.

I just saw it today.

....I am a mild mannered mom/wife ....not given to cursing....

..but two words kept popping up as I watched this .....murderous bas.......

..I was/am so angry....all over again.

I was also trying to gauge the effect it was having on my elderly dad-(sitting next to me), and thought I was completely in control, except for my anger.

However.....when the plane...at the end...

...I lost it, and sat there sobbing and sobbing....

....A powerful movie.

Saw it last night...give it 4 out 5 stars. It was missing some key elements of the day that if Paul would have taken 10 mins more and added it to the film it would have made it that much more intense. I.E. possibly various snippets of actual phone conversations with the families back at home like the A&E version had...that made the movie that much more effective imo for A&E.

Also...a bit more on what was happening in D.C. as word came that United 93 was headed towards there....the panic on the ground and the evacuation of our government.

Other than that...a brilliant film that NEEDS to be seen...if not for just viewing that absolutely breathtaking last 4 minutes.

The actual controlers ARE in the film...just look at the credits of the film as they roll at the end...the name of the controller and then says "HIMSELF".

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I want to take my 13 yr old. son. Would you say it's too much for that age? He's pretty mature.
////////////////////////////////////////////////

What might be too much for him is the world he's growing up into. He needs to be prepared and exposed. If he has expressed a desire and willingness to go, together with an understanding of the subject matter, you should definitely take him with you, in my opinion.

Before going to the movie, I read the 2002 book, "Among the heroes : United Flight 93 and the passengers and crew who fought back" by Jere Longman, published by Harper Collins. The book has many, many pictures of the crew & passengers, plus relevant details of each person's background, how their lives intersected on that day, and some family input.

I still couldn't really place many of the actors but actually that doesn't bother me. The movie was perfect because they were anonymous to most of America anyway up to that day.

I found this site http://www.pahighways.com/features/shanksville.html . A ways down in the site there's a handy list of the crew & passengers with their pictures. Search on: "At 11:17 AM" to find it quickly.
