Would that device have wires sticking out of it? or a clock attached to it? This was no accident.

Thanks for the details! Obviously, I only dimly recalled what I read years ago. BTW, I live in Florida, and a family member who had worked for a connected family told me that the family always went to Florida when they were going to have a case of Italian lightning (insurance fraud arson, for those who don't know) or other inexplicable or inconvenient occurrences.

In any case, it was no laughing matter, and the Mafia were not fun guys - and I have absolutely no idea why the media wants to make them look that way.

I am rather curious as to why this non-issue is such a BIG issue to you.

Ok, we don't have to argue. But you're wrong. I'm not angry at all. I enjoy the English language. That's probably the shortest possible answer. It's not a non-issue to me. It's nothing to get worked up about. I take your word for it that I gave the impression I was worked up, but I'm not. Just opinionated on the matter.

that is characterized by the murder of civilians.

Well not for nothing, but we murdered quite a few civilians at Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and I don't consider our side thugs. And I don't believe in "honorable" war. The British honorably (stupidly) marched right into the Continentals who dishonorably (wisely) hid behind trees to ambush them. The object of war is to win, and the only honor in war is victory. Or so it seems to me. So the Japs flew planes into ships. The ragheads fly planes into buildings. What the hell is the difference? In either case, they are trying to achieve an objective and we want to stop them.

neighbor. He was handcuffed to a pipe in a basement and cut in half with a chainsaw as per Sammy the Bull Gravano.

Oh no. How horrible.

Maybe he was just a disturbed individual or...Maybe a timer was set for 12 noon and automatically changed to 1pm and it didn't go off so he was in the bathroom "working" on it. I wonder if this guy was on the subway an hour earlier. Scary thought. )Is that right? I get the time changes mixed up. I was an hour late for church this morning.)

Everything in your reply seems noteworthy.

I think I remember that one of the "caches" that our boys found in Iraq included gas cans.

I was not aware of that. Gasoline is highly flammable. It seems plausible that it could be used as part of an IED.

Remember that there was a suspicious package the week before at this place and the police were called in.

I wasn't aware of that either. It certainly seems relevant.

Thanks.

OK ... I am sooooo disappointed with all of you!!! I've been out for hours, and had to catch up on this thread, and no one did this (and my husband did, and he's never funny):

No ... he wasn't a Muslim, some guy named Tim.

He just went in for some TimBITS!

"No terrorism in deadly Toronto doughnut shop explosion: police"

Last Updated Sun, 02 Apr 2006 21:16:42 EDT
CBC News

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Police have ruled out terrorism as the cause of an explosion at a Tim Hortons doughnut shop in a trendy downtown area of Toronto on Sunday, killing one man.

The victim was likely an arsonist or attempting suicide, Staff Sgt. Don Cole of Toronto police told reporters hours after the explosion.

"He's not a strap-on al-Qaeda bomber guy," Cole said. "It sounds to me like a guy who either wanted to do a torch job or commit suicide."

Police said the man apparently carried a can of gasoline into a washroom stall about 1 p.m. local time at the doughtnut shop in the city's Yorkville area, and set off a flash fire that killed him."

Would that device have wires sticking out of it? or a clock attached to it? This was no accident.

That seems to be the likeliest interpretation of "device."

If I was a CNN editor and wanted to sanitize these reports further, I'd keep pushing the "wall of flame" quote from an anonymous source and drop all quotes about devices:

"It appears there was a device, but we don't know whether the person brought it in with him, or it he was an innocent party, or if he was a suicide, we just don't know," Staff Sergeant Don Cole said of the device inside the restaurant.

"It's not something that just blew up by itself, it was some device."

Moral of the story - Note to self:

If you have a gas can and are on foot, either there is a car nearby or at home. Either way, your keys are in your pocket along with your ID.

This ain't over.
