The influx of foreigners to New York and its suburbs and the continuing exodus of non-Hispanic whites to other parts of the country have transformed the face of metropolitan New York so profoundly that whites will constitute a minority of the region's population within a few years, demographers say.
The shift would make New York the first large metropolitan area outside the South and West in which whites do not make up a majority, according to an analysis of 2004 Census estimates by the Brookings Institution that was released yesterday.
The analysis also reveals a historic reversal: For the first time since at least the 19th century, the black population of both the city and, to a lesser extent, the region, has declined. In the five boroughs, according to the estimates, the number of blacks declined by about 30,000 since 2000, dipping below 30 percent of the overall population, as the migration of blacks to the suburbs and areas like the South outpaced immigration from the Caribbean and Africa.

I'm sure there is a much larger population of blacks than Hispanics in Chicago. There are three black congressmen and only one Latino.

Well, Hispanics are usually white.
The inner burbs (adjoining Chi) are changing to black and Hispanic. the 'outer burbs' are mostly white.

Nope. There was an article in one of the Chi papers a few days ago. Hispanics are #1, then blacks.

Non-hispanic white people are already a distinct minority riding the NYC Subways, based on my not so scientific observations.
The major trend is the fact that the NY area is increasingly inhabited by affluent whites, and immigrants of various economic levels. The folks that are leaving tend to be blue collar and low-level white collar whites, who simply can't afford to live in the tri-state area, and don't want to live two families to a house.
In terms of real estate values, NY will remain, like California, out of the reach of many people. As a result, the only folks who can live there will be those who have "made it" and those strivers (largely immigrants) who don't mind living several families to a small house.
In the Chicago suburbs, Latinos now outnumber blacks.

Yeah, those Arabs have REALLY ruined the place. Thanks to the A-rabs, tiny houses now go for $600,000, out of reach for the white trash (the ones that tawk like dis) that used to live there. ;-)
Because many "Hispanics" in this country are really pure-blood Mexican Indians.
The only metro area I know of with a large "white hispanic" population is Miami.

They used to be counted as white when crimes were reported. I don't know if they still are. Skewed the data quite a bit.
Not entirely true. The North Shore suburbs ("inner suburbia") are as affluent and exclusive as ever. Same with Naperville and the older western suburbs not immediately adjoining Chicago. The "white trash" areas like Marquette Park and Cicero changed at least 20 years ago, if not more.
