Wednesday, January 11, 2006 ALEXANDRIA, Va. A former congressional aide pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of conspiracy to commit bribery and aiding and abetting the solicitation of bribes by a member of Congress. Brett Pfeffer , a former aide to Rep. William Jefferson , D-La., entered his plea deal in U.S. District Court in Alexandria..."
"Today this defendant admitted to a crime which, at its core, is a bribery scheme involving a public official," said Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher of the Criminal Division.

"The congressman told me of a business opportunity in Nigeria," Pfeffer told Judge T.S. Ellis. "I took that opportunity to a woman I work for. She decided to invest in this company. [Jefferson] would require 5 to 7 percent of the company for his family. In exchange, he would work with officials in Nigeria to further the business." Prosecutor Mark Lytle said the congressman and Pfeffer traveled to Ghana in July to promote a similar deal there.
Pfeffer, 37, told officials that Jefferson accepted bribes in connection to supporting a telecommunications agreement with the Nigerian government. The court documents do not name Jefferson specifically but refer to him only as "Representative A." The documents make obvious that Jefferson is the congressman who allegedly solicited the bribes, which was initiated by the Kentucky-based company, and received monthly payments of $2,500 to $5,000 for his family members between 2004 and August 2005. In August, the FBI searched Jefferson's Louisiana home and Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar's Maryland residence.

He was criticized after Hurricane Katrina for getting the National Guard to escort him to his flooded home at a time when federal resources were sorely strained. Pfeffer's attorney, Paul Knight, and Jefferson's spokeswoman, Melanie Rousell, declined comment.

Jefferson is the dim who comandeered national guard troops to go to his home so he could secure documents that might implicate him in yet another bribery scandal.
Exactly how do you spell "schedenfreude?"
Did somebody say something about "a culture of corruption"?
Well, it's "Schadenfreude" and it sure is fun sometimes....
What idiots in this day and age would fall for such a "Nigerian scam" anyway?? These fools should be prosecuted for terminal stupidity as well as corruption!!
Business opportunity in Nigeria? Did he get an email about some rich Nigerian guy who needed to transfer some funds and would reward him handsomely for his help?
I missed that one...
I'll bet he's the one who has been telling me about all of those business opportunities in Nigeria.
Can't be.
All the Dems and their pundits/commentators have been saying this is a Republican scandal, that no Dems were involved.

[Let's hope it hits the fan and hits it hard. We could use a bunch of totally new faces in Congress.]
the point the media missed is that a Republican NEED NOT be BRIBED to supposedly pony up to a Republican lobbyist and assume a position he or she would otherwise not because of a bribe. It would be near impossible to prove that a Republican voted like a Republican because he was bribed. Clearly those who were most likely to be influenced by Abrahamoff were those who would have otherwise normally voted DEM.
"Congressman A" mentioned in the Abramoff indictment is a Louisiana Democrat"
Is there proof of that in this article?
Thanks for posting.

Wait... but this has nothing to do with Abramoff.
One of our good ol' Louisiana politicians was dirty??? I'm shocked.
Will have to cath this news on the Chris Matthews show. Not.
Remember... Wm J (D) LA was the guy who hijacked the national guard to get to his house in NO after the flooKatrina), and also got the troops to help him move "personal items" up and out of harms way
Two Billy Jeff's in one picture, amazing.
