Officials Fret Over Disappearance Of Explosives 150 Pounds Of Explosives Missing From Sandia-Affiliated Company

POSTED: 2:10 pm MST December 19, 2005 UPDATED: 2:17 pm MST December 19, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Officials discovered hundreds of pounds of explosives stolen in Albuquerque on Sunday.

One hundred fifty pounds of c4, 250 pound deta sheet, and 2,000 blasting caps were taken from a Sandia Labs employee's company.

Officials are very concerned about these thefts.

The items were stolen from a facility in Southwest Albuquerque.

Burglars apparently cut through steel bars to get at the goods.

C4 is a plastic explosive.

A deta sheet is another explosive that looks like a rubbery sheet of orange or green paper.

What makes deta sheets especially dangerous is that they can be hidden in books or letters. It cannot be spotted by a metal detector but are used by engineers for detonation.

Blasting caps are devices used to set off explosives.

If you know anything about the disappearance, please call police.

Officials Fret????

For 150 pounds of C-4 they should do more than 'fret'.

I wonder how many pounds of C4 and ballbearings it would take to detroy a bus. I have to think that 150 pounds is enough to do a crap load of damage.

I hope they get a court order before tapping any phone lines.

I think it is best to wait to hear the bang and look for smoke on the horizon before jumping the gun in these cases, civil liberties and all.

Who knows, we may get lucky and they will take out the Russel building.

Officials are very concerned about these thefts.

Then I would say they are more than fretting.

Additional details from the ABC News story:

ATF agents are investigating the large theft from Cherry Enginering, a company owned by Chris Cherry, for decades the senior explosives scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico. Also, 2,500 detonators were missing from a storage explosive container, or magazine, in the name of Cherry Engineering.

One hundred and fifty pounds of the plastic explosive compound C-4 and 250 pounds of undetectable "sheet explosives" — a DuPont flexible explosive material that can be hidden in books and letters — were stolen in the burglary, which also included the theft of blasting caps.

A special agent at ATF said the incident was unusual because such high-powered material was targeted.

Burglars used a torch bar to break into the explosives containers and remove the material.

The missing material could potentially make numerous bombs.

Understatement of the day.

Burglars apparently cut through steel bars to get at the goods.

Evidently a planned crime, and not just somebody making off with explosives that were lying around carelessly.

I think they'd better catch these guys. And what's with the Sandia Labs connection? I wonder why they mention that?

"I wish Democrats would fret over our National Security."

I wish Republicans would too. Things like this shouldn't occur in a post-9/11 world...a post 9/11 world where the GOP has control of executive and legislative branches, created Dept of Color-coded Homeland Security...searches old ladies rather than Muslims boarding planes...and lets crap like this happen while completely ignoring our Mexican border.

You can blame the Dummycrats. I'm gonna hold responsible the people in power.

I'm more concerned about the Detasheet material, although the C4 is worrisome enough.

The problem is that it's so easy to slip a pre-cut Detasheet into a FedEx, UPS, or Express Mail envelope. I won't go into the possibilities of detonation triggers, but they're not too hard to imagine.

I hope they run these thieves down before they can wreak their havok. In the meantime, if you or your business might possibly be a potential target for any reason, be very careful with express courier deliveries over the next few weeks.

This is potentially a very dangerous situation.
