I'm in charge of a site out the boonies which was subject to vandalism. Security cameras were considered, but we decided first to set up a couple of dummie cameras on poles with signs and lines coming down the pole and buried but going nowhere. Haven't had a lick of trouble since then.
Sorry, but I don't buy the story of it will be too expensive, lead to more exposure in populated areas, etc. Since 9/11 security with cameras, solar panels, etc. is necessary in my opinion. Sure they can be shot out, but some may provide a deterence. I'm not advocating Federal or even state regs. Just common sense would seem to say that more security is needed, and some safeguards would provide some deterence even though a determined thief would find a way around it.
The percussion was about the same as a ground lighting strike would be from the same distance, about 1500 feet.
Locks stop only honest people. Even four pit bulls will only give some people pause to think twice and some would steal the dogs. There is a point of diminishing returns, and there is so much stuff lying around that we have to depend on each other's honesty, and most of the time that is good enough. For the harder cases, who knows. Explosives should be protected to a reasonable degree if only to keep them out of the hands of unsupervised kids, which is probably who did this. Terrorists would have their own means.
Well, a $50,000 reward should flush out the kids -- they like to brag and the money is mighty attractive. Doubt if it is terrorists. More likely someone/group that stole them for their own use or to sell them to a third party who will pay for sophisticated explosives.
Have the authorities hastened to assure us that this is not terrorist related?
Not this time.
And her Father is Jack Daniels (no kidding). Just don't ask her about her brother Bobby.
