...HANNITY: Because you had made a controversial statement, and you seem to be backing off of it now, and it was that people that are here illegally, that they all ought to be sent back.
I'm paraphrasing.
And it seems like now you've sort of backed off that position a little bit, because there are million that we estimate that are in this country illegally.
Why wouldn't we send them back?
CHERTOFF: ...I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...
HANNITY: Why in that sense, aren't you really rewarding those that didn't respect our laws and sovereignty? In other words, OK, you're saying, you came into this country illegally.
Now that we've identified you, we're going to let you even stay longer and make money, and then you can go back in three to six years.
Why don't we say, no, you're here illegally, you didn't respect our laws, you ought to go home? Why don't we just say that?
CHERTOFF: Well, Sean, you know, it's really an issue of practicality.
I mean, as a practical matter, we've got to identify these people and pull them out of the shadows.
Now, this is not an amnesty. This is not the president's proposal is not a path to citizenship. It's clearly temporary, and it clearly envisions people who would have to commit to go back....

Despite "expert" warnings of the possibility of 10,000+ American casualties, I don't recall the Bush Administration saying it was going to be too expensive and impractical to remove the Hussein regime and establish a constitutional democracy in Iraq, halfway around the world.
In fact, in both cases America defied conventional wisdom and made extraordinary and historical accomplishments. But I guess securing our own borders, and identifying and removing 10~11M ILLEGAL aliens in our own country, during a time of war, is just too expensive and impractical...
All of Chertoffs tough talk was exactly that.
DoughtyOne to Chertoff, capturing and prosecuting criminals is too costly, lets empty the prisons and just try to get along.
This guy sounds like a twelve year old that doesn't want to take out the trash. But Mom, drivel follows...
re-populate iraq with them
As a horseman, I have learned a few interesting things that translate to everyday life.
1) You can't make a 1200 pound animal do anything it doesn't want to do, so you have to figure out how to make it want to do what you want it to do.
2) A whip applied appropriately will make a 1200 pound animal want to do a lot of things, even if you never make contact. Just holding it in your hand seems to impress them.
How does this translate?
You state that you are going to incease the number of legal immigrants you allow from Mexico on the condition that they learn English, get a job, and use the immigration process. (The trailer)
Then you also make it clear you will start arresting and sending all illegals back to Mexico. You will fingerprint and photograph them. ANY illegals caught, will have marks on their record against them ever obtaining legal citizenship. (the whip)
I believe that once they see the trailer and the whip, they will get the idea and head south on their own. Those who do not, well...ya have to be willing to use the whip or it does no good.
I think we should get rid of homeland defense/ security. They're soaking up billions of dollars and telling us that it's too expensive to protect the nation.
They will have to take their money back south, and won't be able to get back in.
And GWB and the GOP rah rah crown wonders why his popularity has dwindled????
After 9/11, GWB should have slammed the door on this invasion.
They will lie.
sw
The Bush Admin had no intentions of doing anything about the flood of illegals.
Next year, or sometime in the future, Congress has indicated they will hold hearings....someday, when they get around to it....maybe.
[Nothing is going to be done about it until a group of illegals massacre a few thousand Americans.]
You have just been "trial-ballooned" by Chertoff and Tiny Sean on the whole issue of illegal immigrants and what we are to do with them.
Our administration seems to have decided that we are going to buy the hogwash that sending them all back or imprisoning them and those who hire them is "impractical".
With his "reach" to the heartland Hannity is an official channel for the administration...and that is dis-heartening. They just don't get it. We are not buying their crap. This is indeed the Achilles heel for Bush and the Republicans. It will be just as fatal as it was for Achilles.
You know if we got rid of Homeland Security and repealed the prescription drug bill, we would have plenty of money.
When you consider the number of Americans that have been murdered by illegal aliens; when you considered the number of Americans killed in auto accidents involving illegal aliens; we have probably ALREADY LOST a "few thousand American lives". But since they didn't die in as spectacular a fashion as those on September 11, 2001; this little fact slides under the radar.
..an issue of practicality..
It is impractical and we can't afford to send them back now but we will be able to send them back in three or six years? He honestly expects us to believe that nonsense? After the Bush Administrations willful failure to enforce the border and particularly the interior?
He just wants to sell us a shamnesty. If we buy this nonsense, there will never be any enforcement and nobody will ever leave.
