As a horseman, I have learned a few interesting things that translate to everyday life.

1) You can't make a 1200 pound animal do anything it doesn't want to do, so you have to figure out how to make it want to do what you want it to do.

2) A whip applied appropriately will make a 1200 pound animal want to do a lot of things, even if you never make contact. Just holding it in your hand seems to impress them.

How does this translate?

You state that you are going to incease the number of legal immigrants you allow from Mexico on the condition that they learn English, get a job, and use the immigration process. (The trailer)

Then you also make it clear you will start arresting and sending all illegals back to Mexico. You will fingerprint and photograph them. ANY illegals caught, will have marks on their record against them ever obtaining legal citizenship. (the whip)

I believe that once they see the trailer and the whip, they will get the idea and head south on their own. Those who do not, well...ya have to be willing to use the whip or it does no good.

I've got a better idea: eliminate the border and annex Mexico.

There are already so many illegals here in Calif that when you cross the border into Baja, it doesn't even seem that different any more. Especially between TJ and Rosarito - it's a mini-Orange County in the making. (The housing tracts & retail sections look identical to Irvine.) With so many Americans buying up property, the demographics look just like OC: rich whites/Asians living in nice houses and Hispanic laborers providing the muscle.

Mexico is what is referred to in finance as an 'under-valued asset'. At a purely intrinsic level, it is worth way more than Canada. As it stands, they have a screwed up legal/property/capital system that seriously restricts their growth opportunties. With US legal systems, it would create the world's largest boom market.

The temporary downside would be millions of Dem voters; however, this would only be a short-term issue before capitalism converted their previously indolent country into a mirror of the US. Forget Aztlan; we'll be seeing the descendent of illegals agitating for annexation in a few generation's time.

Excellent post. I have a 1600 lb horse who teaches these same lessons.

That concept is, in general, a good one. For the LIFE of me, though, I cannot see why the only fitting retribution for someone who is here illegally would be deportation.

We have a stupid, backwards, and unrealistic set of limits on those who can come across the border, and it is IMPOSSIBLE (or nearly so) for a Mexican living here to become legal. Let me give you an illustration. My daughter works a part time job at a local grocery. A Salvadorean did not have a legit tax ID number (he was paying SS, fed income tax, medicare, state income, and local taxes into a bogus number, had been doing so for years, but never filed to get refunds because he was afraid). They ran a check on him and found the bogus number. They really did not want to let him go, as he is bright, honest, hard working, doesn't drink, shows up on time, is learning english, and wants to become an engineer someday. He is a good kid, and they LIKE good employees. He was able to contact immigration, get a number, and get legal status in about 4 months. OTOH, another kid from Mexico who fits the same profile simply cannot do so. (they haven't spotted his bogus number yet) There are no provisions for doing so. If he reports himself to immigration, (as Luis, the guy from El Salvador did) they will just deport him.

What I cannot figure out is WHY in God's name freepers won't support some kind of plan to allow these people to pay a financial penalty and STAY. Many of them have supervisory positions, or own small businesses, employ people, have homes, keep the laws as well as most citizens (except those they break because they are simply trying to stay here).

I hear all the talk about sovereignty, border security, and agree, but when it comes to nuts and bolts, what I see is alot of just plain vindictive retribution. I think it is despicable and unamerican.

Thanks for a bit of good horse sense!

It's not the same as turning illegals into the whipping boys for everything wrong.
