...HANNITY: Because you had made a controversial statement, and you seem to be backing off of it now, and it was that people that are here illegally, that they all ought to be sent back.
I'm paraphrasing.
And it seems like now you've sort of backed off that position a little bit, because there are million that we estimate that are in this country illegally.
Why wouldn't we send them back?
CHERTOFF: ...I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...
HANNITY: Why in that sense, aren't you really rewarding those that didn't respect our laws and sovereignty? In other words, OK, you're saying, you came into this country illegally.
Now that we've identified you, we're going to let you even stay longer and make money, and then you can go back in three to six years.
Why don't we say, no, you're here illegally, you didn't respect our laws, you ought to go home? Why don't we just say that?
CHERTOFF: Well, Sean, you know, it's really an issue of practicality.
I mean, as a practical matter, we've got to identify these people and pull them out of the shadows.
Now, this is not an amnesty. This is not the president's proposal is not a path to citizenship. It's clearly temporary, and it clearly envisions people who would have to commit to go back....

I think if you made it ILLEGAL for employers with heavy fines and jail time, the other ILLEGAL problem would go away. Just enforce the laws that are on the books!
In Dallas a young police officer was gunned down by an illegal alien from Mexico...of course you'd have to scour the media to know that he's illegal!! But try telling his widow that it's too expensive or impractical to remove the illegals from this country...I bet I can find plenty of funds in the foreign aide budget that should be re-directed into fighting this invasion of our country by those people who are willing to break the law.
But you are implying that we would enforce the law against employers. You know the elites will never stand for that! They will call their Congressperson! And unlike when we call, they will get results!
Yep stiff financial penalties for employers for each illegal employee and asset forfeture plus laws denying taxpayer funded social services to illegal aliens except those accepting deportation should do the trick, plus would be revenue generating and not cost a dime. Chertoff is a arrogant obnoxious d!ckhead.
Relax guys, once all the "jobs americans wont do" are gone, no more illegals will come here.

"Crack down on businesses that hire illegals."
A highly unpopular action, I'm afraid, among the businesses, many of whom were donors in 2004.
Another idea is for individuals and good businesses who don't hire illegals to refuse to do business with firms who employ illegals.
Having some remodeling or building done? Ask the contractor how he insures that no illegals work for him. Not a good answer? Find someone else.
Dining out? See that busboy who doesn't speak English? Leave.
Run a business? Contact your suppliers and insist that they provide you with WRITTEN assurance that they don't employ illegals. If you later find that they do, find another supplier.
When you find that a business employs illegals, speak to the owner or manager and tell him/her that you do not patronize businesses that hire illegals. Follow up with a letter saying the same thing.
It's one thing to ask the government to clean up a situation it has long allowed to grow. It's something else to take some personal responsibility and demand of those you do business with that they obey the law.
This is what I do.
The very idea that illegal aliens cannot be identified is inaccurate. For example, the Kansas City Misouri police department has a database of over 100 illegal aliens at the local day labor center. I'm sure that PD's in other states have done the same. Let's start with this identified population.
We don't have to have an all out program to hunt them down and send them back. First, plug the border. Then, as the really bad ones pop up in minor arrests or as they place demands on healthcare facilities and government assistance programs, take action to send them back.
Exactly!
Plug border, and drip drip drip em out. Seeing the numbers go down is the point. Yeah, may take years, but they will be going down-- not UP.
Excellent post. I have a 1600 lb horse who teaches these same lessons.
spot on well said
>>>[Nothing is going to be done about it until a group of illegals massacre a few thousand Americans.]>>>
Nah. We'll just find another country to bomb and leave the illegals here alone. Wouldn't want to hurt any feelings or mess with Democrats votes or anything.
My solution ? Any kid born in the US to illegals is illegal as well. See - it's simple.
It is really is sickening that without the conservatives Bush would never have been relected, and yet he says go screw to our concerns about the borders. But MBNA gives a few palty million in contributions to the GOP and get perhaps $10 billion in additional profits over 10 years via the bankruptcy "reform" bill.
The only thing good about having the illegals here is that when dems complain there are no jobs and no opportunities anymore in America you can laugh at dem and tell them how any mexican with a hammer, a little skill, and a work ethic contributes more in a day to America that a dem does in a lifetime.
Not true - if they have had kids born in this country, the kids are eligible for welfare etc etc as US citizens. That problem has to be solved as well.

There's a little thing called the constitution..if you are born here you are a U S citizen. Are you ready or have the ability to change the constitution?
We have a stupid, backwards, and unrealistic set of limits on those who can come across the border, and it is IMPOSSIBLE (or nearly so) for a Mexican living here to become legal. Let me give you an illustration. My daughter works a part time job at a local grocery. A Salvadorean did not have a legit tax ID number (he was paying SS, fed income tax, medicare, state income, and local taxes into a bogus number, had been doing so for years, but never filed to get refunds because he was afraid). They ran a check on him and found the bogus number. They really did not want to let him go, as he is bright, honest, hard working, doesn't drink, shows up on time, is learning english, and wants to become an engineer someday. He is a good kid, and they LIKE good employees. He was able to contact immigration, get a number, and get legal status in about 4 months. OTOH, another kid from Mexico who fits the same profile simply cannot do so. (they haven't spotted his bogus number yet) There are no provisions for doing so. If he reports himself to immigration, (as Luis, the guy from El Salvador did) they will just deport him.
What I cannot figure out is WHY in God's name freepers won't support some kind of plan to allow these people to pay a financial penalty and STAY. Many of them have supervisory positions, or own small businesses, employ people, have homes, keep the laws as well as most citizens (except those they break because they are simply trying to stay here).
I hear all the talk about sovereignty, border security, and agree, but when it comes to nuts and bolts, what I see is alot of just plain vindictive retribution. I think it is despicable and unamerican.
