Despite heavy Soviet losses during their occupation, I don't recall the Bush Administration saying it was going to be too expensive and impractical to remove the Taliban regime and establish a constitutional democracy in Afghanistan, halfway around the world.

Despite "expert" warnings of the possibility of 10,000+ American casualties, I don't recall the Bush Administration saying it was going to be too expensive and impractical to remove the Hussein regime and establish a constitutional democracy in Iraq, halfway around the world.

In fact, in both cases America defied conventional wisdom and made extraordinary and historical accomplishments. But I guess securing our own borders, and identifying and removing 10~11M ILLEGAL aliens in our own country, during a time of war, is just too expensive and impractical...

All of Chertoffs tough talk was exactly that.

DoughtyOne to Chertoff, capturing and prosecuting criminals is too costly, lets empty the prisons and just try to get along.

This guy sounds like a twelve year old that doesn't want to take out the trash. But Mom, drivel follows...

As a horseman, I have learned a few interesting things that translate to everyday life.

1) You can't make a 1200 pound animal do anything it doesn't want to do, so you have to figure out how to make it want to do what you want it to do.

2) A whip applied appropriately will make a 1200 pound animal want to do a lot of things, even if you never make contact. Just holding it in your hand seems to impress them.

How does this translate?

You state that you are going to incease the number of legal immigrants you allow from Mexico on the condition that they learn English, get a job, and use the immigration process. (The trailer)

Then you also make it clear you will start arresting and sending all illegals back to Mexico. You will fingerprint and photograph them. ANY illegals caught, will have marks on their record against them ever obtaining legal citizenship. (the whip)

I believe that once they see the trailer and the whip, they will get the idea and head south on their own. Those who do not, well...ya have to be willing to use the whip or it does no good.

Just a) tighten border security and b) ban the wire transfer of money by private individuals to Mexico, and the problem will take care of itself.

They will have to take their money back south, and won't be able to get back in.

And GWB and the GOP rah rah crown wonders why his popularity has dwindled????

After 9/11, GWB should have slammed the door on this invasion.

In Malaysia last year, the government just told everyone that if you are illegal you have 6 weeks to get out. If you don't we'll put you in prison.

Guess what? A significant number of their illegal population voluntarily left! For those that couldn't arrange their own transportation to get out, the Malaysian navy provided transportation as well. All the administration has to do is say, "we're going to start imprisoning all of you if you don't leave". They will leave and it won't cost hardly anything to our government. Then to follow up, give prison time and/or hefty fines to those who come back. When it starts to cost the illegals more money than what they'd get by working here illegally, they'll stop coming.

The Bush Admin had no intentions of doing anything about the flood of illegals.

Next year, or sometime in the future, Congress has indicated they will hold hearings....someday, when they get around to it....maybe.

[Nothing is going to be done about it until a group of illegals massacre a few thousand Americans.]

One of the reasons I think that we've been focusing on the idea of a temporary worker program as part of a larger strategy for border security is because it would be a way to siphon off people who really want to do nothing more than work here, put them into a regulated program — we would know who they are — we would then be able to send them back at the end of a period of three years or six years.

It is impractical and we can't afford to send them back now but we will be able to send them back in three or six years? He honestly expects us to believe that nonsense? After the Bush Administrations willful failure to enforce the border and particularly the interior?

He just wants to sell us a shamnesty. If we buy this nonsense, there will never be any enforcement and nobody will ever leave.

CHERTOFF: ...I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...

I never thought I'd say these words, but please "raise my taxes". Or lower them or do whatever it takes.

The United States must not be a country where criminals are welcomed and talented law-abiding potential immigrants are told to put their names on endless lists.

Chertoff- it's time to get real. Get lawless interlopers out of my home. That's the least government can do.

As if supporting via food stamps, education, FREE HEALTH CARE TO THOSE WHO FREQUENT HOSPITALS AND/OR RECEIVE MEDICAID isn't too expensive.

The USG doesn't have to send most of them back if they crack down on employers. The illegals will go back by themselves if they don't have jobs.

We don't have to identify all 11 (22?) million of these illegal aliens, round them up and transport them back. Instead, make life so difficult on them (and their employers and their welfare state enablers) they no longer want to either come here or stay here. These people have two legs. Let them use them, not taxpayer-paid airline tickets. Most of them will take themselves back when it's no longer worth it to stay here. The ones which are left we can round up and deport. They're pretty easy to identify.

What is wrong with this utterly clueless and feckless Administration, anyhow? Don't they realize the American people want this problem FIXED, and now? We're not interested in their lame excuses!

How many HUNDREDS of billions have we spent on those projects? Chertoff is a liar. He speaks with a forked tongue. They have no intention of removing those people. Also, six months ago he said that they haven't acted because they didn't have a plan. Last night he said they have the resources now to MAKE A PLAN! He is such a looser.

And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous.

Dear Secretary Chertoff:

I see you take illegal immigration as serious as you took disaster planning prior to Katrina.

With a few simple changes, you will not need to deport millions of illegals. Simply change things so that they become willing to deport themselves:

Wall off the border.

Crack down on businesses that hire illegals.

Prohibit the children of illegals from attending schools that receive federal funding, or else the schools lose the funding.

Prohibit federal funds for being used for illegals except for emergency medical care.

And take all the money we'd save and buy buses. During hurricane season, we can use them to evacuate people from places that haven't prepared. Off-season, offer free rides for illegals to go back to Mexico.
