LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Friends and relatives have said their final goodbyes to Wisconsin high school senior Seth Hammes.
Hammes, 17, was out using his camcorder as he explored the woods near Little Falls, Wis., last Saturday when the camera ended up recording his own fatal shooting.
After searchers found his body that night, investigators ran the videotape, which had captured the crack of gunshots, the teen's screams and the voice of the shooter, promising help that never came.
Police said the camcorder was the key to catching the man now charged with reckless homicide, 24-year-old Russell Schroeder. He told police he thought he saw an animal when he fired the shots, and he didn't call for help after seeing Hammes because he feared he would get in trouble.
The funeral service for Hammes was held Thursday.
His uncle, Ed Hammes, described his nephew as a gentle giant, who stood over six feet tall and wore size 17 shoes. He said the teen liked to tinker with the family's lawn mowers and research fireworks, but mostly he was someone who would go out of his way to help another.
Schroeder was being held on $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 85 years in prison.
Too bad a camcorder was not recording at Chappaquiddick when Teddy "did not call for help."
Schroeder definitely has all the Democratic Senator qualities.
Which is why hunters should NEVER get the luggage rack option on their hunting vehicle. Looks just like whitetail antlers. I was rabbit hunting one time and crossed paths with some other hunters. About the time I am broad side of them about 50 yards away, they jump a rabbit and it ran right at me. I turned my back to them just in time to get sprayed with the buckshot. Didn't draw any blood fortunately. I just hustled on away from the moron for fear I would shoot back.
I agree with you....this guy is lying through his teeth. In this case, the police authorities may be smart enough to nail him. They were bright enough to have played the video tape.
The tape shows a person Quirin said is Schroeder in a nearby field. Schroeder's voice can be heard, telling Hammes he'll call for help on his cell phone, the complaint said.
Then Schroeder says he can't find a signal and promises to get help. But according to the complaint, he instead went to a birthday party, home to play video games and then his job as a custodian at the Army's Fort McCoy near Sparta. ---
Buckshot on a rabbit? Sounds like the idiot was out to kill something, anything. Including you if you got in the line of fire. You're a lucky hunter to have walked away unscathed.
Then, about an hour later, I'd see them back again, when they couldn't figure out how to operate the action on their shiny new gun. I probably shouldn't have shown them how to operate it, but I was young and I think that part of me was hoping they'd off a few of each other. ;-) I recall wondering how they ever got their licenses...we had to complete a course, written test, and shooting test.
I could hunt there myself, but believe me, I never would do so with these idjits out there.
Have you ever seen a deer ripped half to death in winter because there was too little food for it to have the strength to escape, dragging what's left of it by its remaining front legs until the blood loss can kill it?
I don't understand how anyone could derive think that is less pain and terror than being shot. But then again, I think that few people other than those who are avid hunters have respect for wild animals these days.
It's black bear season, with the leaves still on the trees I can see it happening.
Sorry, didn't mean to imply it was 0 or 00 buckshot. I would guess it was number 6 or 8 shot. 00 would have put me under at that range I suspect. As was, it just stung like the dickens. I may have sworn under my breath a little. They may have even heard the part about their maternal ancestry.
I had a brown duck game vest, Carhart overalls and an insulated Carhart jacket on. Yes, did have the requisite orange hat and had orange on my game vest. I was most defintely not dressed as anything that was in season.
If you don't like to hunt, don't hunt. You are well within your rights to control hunting on your property as well.
I would wager that you haven't tried hunting, so you don't understand the appeal. That's OK. More for me!
Didn't know that from this article, thanks for the info!
My father's family, whom I love and admire, are avid hunters--the men, the women, and the children.
My father was not, though he loved to fish, but I never heard him comment one way or another about hunting.
When I was a teenager I hunted with my family. I have killed ducks, and I have been involved with killing deer, boar, racoons, possoms, and other animals, though I never killed one myself. I hated watching them die.
I never liked hunting because I never enjoyed subjecting an animal to pain, terror, and death, and I never understood how anyone could. I still don't.
I have no problem with others who do--including my family members.
I am also a vegetarian--for the same reason, I suppose--but I have no quarrel with those who are not.
Incidentally, a dear friend invited me for dinner, and as a special surprise, she served me venison, that someone had given her. (She forgot that I was a veg.) I ate it. I appreciated her kindness. I would do it again.
Thought he was big foot. Actually, he wasn't far from it.
Remember the woman in Texas a couple years ago who hit a pedestrian who got lodged in her windshield, but was still alive. She drove home with him hanging out her windshield, drove into the garage and left him there to die...only because she was afraid of getting in trouble. Ya just can't make this kind of stuff up, can ya!
