I'm not sure 85 years behind bars is appropriate.
85 years is perfectly appropriate. That's 5 years for accidentally shooting someone in the woods, and 80 years for deliberately murdering a 17 year old boy by leaving him to bleed to death in the woods. The shooter knew the boy would die without medical help and declined to assist. That was a conscious and planned act that resulted in the death of another person.
At the very minimum it's voluntary manslaughter. Because the shooter had plenty of time to think about it and rationalize his choice as he hiked out of the woods, it's more likely murder.
