CNN Headline news reporter just stated that the military will not force folks from their homes. "Refusing to force Americans from their homes", said the noticeably British reporter. Further, they will not let residents deteriorate in their own homes. The military will continue to get water and food to those remaining in New Orleans, effectively undermining Nagin's mandatory evacuation order.
Nagin is still giving orders down there?? I thought he ceded his authority last week.
There are other ports, and there needs to be more built.
Having all the eggs in on basket is a great way to loose a lot of eggs.
Posse Comitatus forbids it.
I heard that a dredging project in the Ship Channel in Houston is being accelerated so that the ships that normally drop part of their load in NO can bring the whole thing to H-town.
"Some people are prepared for these things. I know I can turn my water and power off and go for a couple of weeks without any outside assistance right now. With 24 hours
notice it's just a matter of getting a few gallons of gas,
a couple of tanks of propane a few perishables and all my laundry done and I'm ready to go a couple of months."
you don't already have all that stuff? (except the laundry, anyway...)
I bet you developers were starting to circle the evening that it was clear so much of New Orleans was flooded.
The funny/tragic thing is, neither Nagin nor Blanco seem to have any idea how our federal system works. Did either of them ever take a course in basic US government before?
A bunch of them came here to Atlanta for a few days break too. I wonder what our soldiers working long hours day after day in Iraq and Afghanistan think about their taking a break from their jobs and their own city after a week? The local government, police, and other officials of New Orleans haven't exactly had a "finest hour," have they?
I was thinking the same thing. Enlist their help, it is needed. Make them participants in the greater good, for the greater good. Bottom feeders and nonparticipants forced to leave, period.
As far the the ED grab, when they first started the huge mass evacuations the thought crossed my mind. Many of these people left believing they'd be allowed back in a few months, but I too am starting to go from an ED grab as a fleeting thought to a bit more concerned. Reports are starting to come in that power, water, etc. are coming back online are they going to be evac. those areas too? Note that MS residents are starting clean-up as areas are released to do so, why are NO residents not participating in the clean-up or planned to help with their own clean-up?
Again, something just doesn't feel right about the decisions that are being made. Like many here, I too could survive several months without assistance. I guess I'll just have to watch as events unfold, but there is a heartbreaking feeling starting to get worse.
You know why the sharks won't eat a developer who falls out of a boat at sea?
Professional courtesy.
The Port of Houston and Barbours Cut can handle almost an unlimited amount of shiping.Unlike other ports Houston does something called direct discharge. That means direct from ship to truck instead of exdock like NO. The infrastructure is here. I am talking steel items such as pipe, plate, coils, rebar, pilings etc.
Power is starting to come back in some sections:
Excerpt:
Power returning
Parts of the Central Business District and the Warehouse District had power Tuesday, said Dan Packer, president and chief executive officer of Entergy New Orleans.
He said he hoped to have the entire CBD up in a few days. Authorities worked to get hotels up and running to house hundreds of workers who will be faced with the daunting task of helping rebuild the city.
I'm a 'geographically impaired'. :) Does Houston have access to the Mississippi?
And wouldn't Baton Rouge block the river going north for vessels (big ones)?
Maybe you could add "those who were names on a roster and payroll only"
He has been completely stuned by a beeber-like device!
Our military is absolutely right. This is not their mission and by the posse comitatus act, which a friend sent to me this morning, it would be illegal for them to do so.
What other ports have the access to the Mississippi?
The military does not really have jurisdiction over the civil authorities to forcibly evict people from their homes. This is a civil matter and a police matter.
A friend sent me the Posse Comitatus Act this morning and it is pretty clear.
