President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Broke my heart. They were trying to be strong, but you could tell these ladies were scared for their lives, not from the floodwaters, but from the armed thugs roaming the city that have pillaged other hospitals and taken staff hostage. What are they going to do when their generator goes out (praying for a miracle like the widow's lamp oil) and they're in the dark? Thank God their phone line works (for the moment, as long as the generator is up) so they could share their plight.

Must have started letting people in without searching them at the end on Sunday... I thought they had/were searching for drugs and weapons yet all got in... and how in Gods name do you rape someone with so many people around.
I am grieving. Partly for the destruction wrought by the storm, but mostly for the destruction wrought by our own people.
There is a lesson here, and we need to learn it.
The gangs did not evacuate. When so many of the others left, they had nothing to hold them in check. Left to run wild, everyone but the liberals can see how ugly they really are. No one but the most blind and PC liberal blames President Bush for the mob ruining what is left of New Orleans.
I think this will change the country. It is obvious: Gangs are an animal underclass. That animal underclass is running wild in New Orleans.
The REAL result is going to be a last minute wake up call. The lesson is obvious. It we learn that lesson, the next time we have a catastrophe this kind of lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The next catastrophe could be an earthquake, or another hurricane. Or, much worse, it could be an attack by Islamic nut cases with weapons of mass destruction, carried out against many cities at once. If that happens, and it certainly could, it will be horrible.
But no matter what the next catastrophe is, we will be much better prepared. No way will most cities let what is happening in New Orleans happen to them.
We don't know the future, and we certainly do not know God's plan. But it looks to me like this is a wake up call. We lost a city, but there is a lesson here we HAD to learn.
Life goes on. We need to do better next time, and we will.

Chernoff - "we may be sending more force than we need but we want to send unambiguous message we do not tolerate this behavior"
I keep praying that these terrible reports are a SMALL percentage the criminals, then I read about the bodies of 2 small girls, 12 and 15 perhaps, SHOT to death.
This is a tragedy on the highest scales involving the lowest.

The Swat stuff is coming from LIVE VIDEO not scanner, fyi (watching very closely to avoid Loose Lips)
Now from scanner . . . armed civilians surrounding police officers near Marriot . . .
Uh and the utter lack of a natural disaster. Oh and massive looting. If you want to compare the footage of the looting that took place during th LA riots to the footage of the looting that took place during the LA riots I am sure I could dig up some footage. There were literall thousands of people looting in LA. People were driving in from the suburbs to loot. I have seen maybe a couple hundred people looting in NO. Entire blocks were burning for days on end in LA. I haven't seen that in NO.
"Armed civilians surrounding police officers"
From the scanner, somewhere overlooking the canal near the Marriott.
Any specifics on the number on the ground and how many comimg and when?
"Armed civilians surrounding police officers at the Marriott Hotel...." Dear God what the HELL is going on. Bring in the Chinooks again. This is so, so, sad.
From scanner - police are surrounded (and apparently pinned down) by civilians on Canal Street - reported by woman in Mariott Hotel.
However, report came in at 12:45. Those cops are *screwed*.
"Get a grip. Been riots and mobs since the dawn of time..."
You get a grip. The result of the removal of God from public life over the last 30 or so years has been the reduction of millions of Americans to the basest form of instinctual living. It has revealed our essential fallen nature, which, as you say, has been the same since Adam and Eve made their fateful choice.
As has been said often enough, we are always "one generation from barbarism." That generation, namely, the Woodstock generation, has come.
