President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
I apologize. I still feel that posts saying these storms are signs of the end times are suggesting God's judgment. I challenge you to consider that we have no idea how bad God's judgment and signs of the end times will be. For instance, travel back to London during the plague, and then the city burned to the ground. They took it as signs of the end times, yet, we are still here trudging along as always.
These storms have occurred on the shores of America longer than there have been inhabitants to see them. Just because we record their history and ferocity, and more people are in their path to suffer the devastation, does not mean they are getting any worse.
As you know, I called my Congressman. They need to start pushing FEMA too in addition to individual efforts. Where's the Senate and the House???? This is huge.
Got "causeway" evac done - sending excess buses (25) to somewhere else (Superdome?) - so at least that means they got a bunch of people on buses and rolling out of N.O.
Now securing areas around dome in prep for evac process.
Guards sound very confident, very on top of things.
Again, starting to sound like adults are back in charge.
Sounds like some are, some are sleeping in N.O.
Got a link? Or where have you heard that?
Anyone watching the WH press conference, the blaming of GWB has begun!
I wonder if someone should start a tread for ideas on how we can all prepare ourselves for a disaster like this? People could share ideas about what kinds of food, tools, other essentials to have on hand.
I'm assuming you're an LSU Tiger? Are you eyewitness to any of this?
You know some gangs in the US have merged with al quaeda. I wouldn't be surprised if AQ had the ak-47s and are shooting the guard.
Old hag (Helen Thomas) - asking about National Guard in Iraq coming back.
Time for me to step out...I'll be back...
I don't understand how people think.
Freepmail about our missing ATRW member -- he's safe.
Didn't that old hag retire?
Pretty much tells the story.
The MSM are the moral equivalent of those looters on the ground. Interfering with the needs of the government to act properly as far as I'm concerned.
I HATE the MSM!!!! Do they think it it only takes a few hours for the federal government to get extensive help to the area?
Just when I think I can't get any more disgusted with the, they show how low they can go with every crisis. I have zero respect for them!
Right, who would have predicted a war zone? It takes time to get armies and their logistical support in place. The only way this could have had a fast response would have been to have had forward operating military bases already in place, stocked with personell, guns, food, ammo. Criticism of agencies now is just venting frustration.
God I hope this is true.
