The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Well I heard that news this morning, they said "help is on it's way." I think they plan to use them to evacuate more people than they can with other means, as the swift
boats can get in places where other vehicles can't.

I cannot believe how bad it is either. They have lost boundaries and GPS is not working now. This is terrible. Listening to WWL (have it minimized) and it is getting worse.

Some of the water levels are extremely high and they cannot find tops of roofs.

So You guess that if the water can be removed within a month, that the majority houses will be salvageable? But the mold will be aweful!"

The mold grows on the inside of the sheetrock. That will have to be replaced...how many hundreds of thousands of houses? I think you can pressure wash mold off bare studs.

Look at it my way. If the surge and flooding had happened at the height of the storm, all those buildings would now be heaps of debris.

I have seen people predicting a media blackout - as an order. Why would they do that? When is the last time there was a media blackout.

Nobody can be spared to save the seal. All that would happen to the seal would be a slow, painful death.

Horrifically practical, but the most merciful option.

From Davenport to Memphis it has been very low.

They have been dredging from St. Louis to Cairo, Illinois to keep a channel deep enough for barge traffic.

Why isn't Bush speaking on this yet, btw? Where is he? Why isn't the military being moved in?

Thanks for the update. The media has beat this horse into the ground over the past few days.

Maybe now there will be some new refineries.

The flooding of the French Quarter is confusing. The Quarter is above 3-4 feet above sea level as are all the areas close to the Mississippi levee. But Lake Ponchartrain is still at 4.44 feet above sea level at midlake according to the USGS tide guage there. So if the Mississippi levee broke, which I doubt, the Quarter will get 10-12 feet of water. But if the French Quarter remains at 1-2 feet, it means that it's gotten about to the current level of the Lake and might not get worse there.

The downtown area and much of the city is several feet below sea level, but it will be much, much more feasible to drain that if the river doesn't break through.

I'm not suggesting that we'll have to. We'll import all of our gasoline for the same reason we import electronics from Asia, coffee from South America, and manual labor from Mexico -- because it's cheaper that way.

No way to repair the levees right now according to WWL. And they have now shut down the pumping on the east back.

They are trying to save as many people as they can right now. Many holes and breeches in the Mississippi River levee -- they do not know where the river starts and begins. Mississippi River has breeched the levees -- that is why so much water.
