The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

You forgot how every zot is also laser etched into a granite ball and delivered to Tom Cruise at his command center.

Getting everyone out of the city as the Mayor has said it will be flooded by nine feet in the next 12-15 hours.

Yes, it will all have to be leveled and backfilled about 18 feet to rebuild.

I am surprised it lasted that long now that this has happened.

Yes, the bluntness of it sounds so harsh.

Reality is there is no clean water anywhere, no facilities left to properly house the animal, let alone feed the animal. Help from another source like another aquirium or Sea World would be impossible to get there in time. Sad situation, but the choice was one out of compassion.

"To: JellyJam
My understanding THERE ARE NO BUILDINGS LEFT STANDING IN PASS CHRISTIAN, Bay St. Louis is next to it. I lived in both places on my sailboat. What I heard from Bay St. Louis is from one
family. They built a house with the foundation above the high water mark of Camille. It flooded up to the roof. They had tied a small sailboat out in the yard and were able to make it to the boat. They rode the
rest of the storm out in the boat. Most people had gone up to the Stennis Space Center. Bay St. Louis is where the hurricane party was during Camille. The first place I had my boat was in a marina that was
about three miles or more inland. There was a building there that had survived Camille. It was up on stilts and the high water mark of Camille was still up on the ceiling on the first floor. This surge was higher
than Camille probably a good eight to ten feet. Pray for these poor people."

I have seen anecdotal reports from survivors which, if believed, indicating a surge exceeding 40'. Camille's surge at Port Christian was officially 24.7 feet. Your post indicates a minimum of 32.7 to 34.7', plus wave heigth.

I'm sure it was a mercy killing. The seal must have been too badly injured and no way to treat it.

Correct. But the water has already been up to the superdome, which is at or slightly above sea level. So if it is going to max at 3' above sea level, as recently announced, then it isn't going to rise much further. At 3' above sea level it shouldn't rise above most rooftops.

Get out of the city? You mean downtown specifically, or anywhere in the whole of NO? Will there be 9 feet of water in downtown NO or in addition to all the water in the whole area?

"This is dreadful. Does anyone have an any idea if water on both sides of the river at the levys could compromise them? That's the only thing that could be worse at this point."

Absolutely - they water proof the footing on one side only.

"Small consolation, but it least this did not happen during the raging of the storm. New Orleans would look more like Gulf Port."

Yeah, but it is about to get real dark in NO real soon. After surviving where Charley, Frances and Jeanne crossed paths, I know what darkness is... I just can't imagine what it would be like to have water rising around me in the dark. Very sad...
