Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Are the FReepers in the area who haven't checked in yet, checking in by posting to the other thread? That map is scaring the daylights out of me. :(
I know communications, electricity, roads are down... I am worried nonetheless.
how many square miles are how deep with water? and is it still filling with water?
test
Pascagoula, with a warning of a possible westward shift, at 4pm central on Friday, but computer models targeting LA was hours earlier, and available to officials long before the public announcement. Heard Babbling Blanco again tonight rattling off about how late it was and how surprise they were. In 6 months call her up before federal hearings, too.
BTW, as long as I'm being critical, this host on CNN is an annoying idiot.
After Charley last year, it was the sight of convoys of power trucks from all over the country (and even from Canada) coming down the highways that lifted our spirits. Some people even pulled over to the side of the road to cheer as they rolled by.
What location is that video?
the airports....and the OIL platforms and refineries
Can't confirm that, but we did see a poultry farm in Carol County (?) NW part of the state was leveled, man was hospitilized according to report. Tornado in Barrow county GA a short while ago--tore the roof off a KFC, ni injuries reported. Gonna be a long night..these are coming in bands. It's not over.
"Twin Span down"
causeway to Slidell
The "Twin Span" over Lake Poncha-whatever is "gone" per FEMA (via WDSU)...
Also a "HUGE" fire is burning somewhere in N.O. area . . .
Oh, I always respond, if the only thing I can do is mumble to myself.
WDSU says
The twinspan is gone.
You can see a "Gulfport Printing" sign during the video.
CNN showed people "wading" waist-deep in that water. Didn't anyone TELL 'em about the GACK stuff???

Thanks to everyone for putting up with me tonight!
If you DO decide to enter this area come with the expectation that NOTHING and NO ONE can help you. You must be self sufficient. Don't expect ATM's, McDonalds etc to function. You must bring with your own supplies and a good plan to remain self supporting for several days. if you bring equipment (chainsaws, whatever) KNOW how to run them safely. You will just add to the problem if you injure yourself. Bring enough food and water. Bring adequate shelter. Bring mosquito replleant by the gallon! And get your tetnus booster up to date BEFORE you show up. You will be functioning in an austre enviroment so be ready.
Good Luck, God Bless, and get some rest!

"I picked the wrong week to give up ____________......."From the Airplane movie.
WDSU is reporting that (per the FEMA director):
1) The bridge between Slidell and New Orleans (the "twin spans") is just *GONE*. It's not there any more.
2) There is a massive fire cutting I-10 off (location not specified).
This would be why nothing's getting in.
I don't know. most of the video on CNN shows people wading in water - so figure 4-5 feet for those areas. then there are other areas where the roofs of 2 story houses are visible, so that's a 15-18 foot depth in those areas.
