A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

I have a question that has been on my mind since the WWII memorial went up.
and yesterday someone who called one of the radio talk shows also brought this up
There is no national memorial dedicated to those who fought and died during WWI.
I heard there were 50 WWI vets still alive, they talked about two of them one in Virginia who is 103 yrs old and enlisted in 1917 at the age of 16 (i guess he lied about his age to get in)
And another who lives in Maryland and is 105 yrs old. now since these and 48 others still survive, I'm wondering if a movement could get started up towards the establishment to erect such a monument?
I mean I know there is no possibility of getting it up while there are still veterans of WWI as these 50 heroes are close to if not over 100 yrs in age and are not much longer with us, but I feel there should be a tribute to them and thier fallen comrades along side the the memorials for WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
What do you think? And how do you get a project like this started?

Mornin'/afternoon to Military Monday on Tuesday at
FR's Finest...T'was a GREAT weekend filled with opportunities to attend Memorial Day presentations in our area. I took in three different events and the best came last. I Got Kissed...
The temperatures were in the eighties as I watched and listened to the speakers at the ceremony held at Lakewood Memorial Park. Flags had been place on all veterans gravesites. Large flags were place along all the pathways - flags which once covered the caskets of local veterans were donated to the cemetery in memory of family members who served in our Armed Forces. As one speaker noted, there is nothin' that looks better than those beautiful red, white and blue colors.
Towards the end of the program, a slight breeze came up and caused those flags to gently flutter. That's when I got "the kiss." Old Glory, on the pole next to me, reached out an kissed me on the cheek.

U.S. Air Force
Airman Theresa Hochstein
Staff Sgt. Matthew Hochstein
Sister, Brother Reunite in Iraq
line space
By U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Melissa Phillips
407th Air Expeditionary Group Public Affairs
TALLIL AIR BASE, Iraq, May 31, 2005 An airman here got quite a surprise when she got off the plane in a forward-deployed location in Southwest Asia in transit to her final destination here.
It was the smiling face of her brother, Staff Sgt. Matthew Hochstein, an aerospace ground equipment technician with the 379th Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron who is deployed from Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.
I mentioned to him that I was going to stop there (and gave him my planes mission number), but I didnt expect for him to be waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs when I exited the plane, said Airman 1st Class Theresa Hochstein, a supply technician with the 407th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron here.
She had planned to call him later that night when the group of airmen she was traveling with was dismissed to rest before their next flight. The encounter was their first meeting since Christmas.
Since this is her first deployment in her two-year tenure with the Air Force, the airman stocked up on advice from her big brother who has been deployed five times in his military career.
He told me about some of the things he saw during his past deployments, and that gave me a better idea of what I was getting into, said Airman Hochstein, whose job is to supply airmen here the tools they need to maintain and improve their work areas.
While at her brothers deployed location, Airman Hochstein took him along with her to the base exchange to purchase a few last-minute things.
He said for me to get the little stick-up air fresheners, said Airman Hochstein, who deployed from Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. I didnt understand why until I got here.
These tents are really old; the air fresheners really help because if you put them in the air vent then the whole tent will smell good, she said.
Airman and Sgt. Hochstein are the only two out of six children who are in the military.
It was nice to see him and that he was doing well, Airman Hochstein said. Ive always looked at the challenges Ive faced in my career as, If Matt can do it, so can I.
Sergeant Hochstein said he thinks this deployment will be a good experience for his little sister.
Now she gets to meet new people, travel the world and see many different things and cultures, he said.
Although she has traveled a world away from her hometown of Hartington, Neb., her family is always close in her thoughts.
Weve always had a close family, and Im the farthest away, she said. I have five brothers, and they mean the world to me.
I tell my friends and family that this is a chance to really make a difference, and this is one of those sacrifices that you can see the direct effect that it has on so many people, Airman Hochstein said.

Hello, all the Finest on this Military *Tuesday*. Thanks to you every week, Rus, for posting this thread so we may take a look at some of FR's Finest Military and show our appreciation and thanks, and offer prayers for the safety of those who are in harm's way now.
Hope everyone had a memorable Memorial Day weekend.
Last night we watched PBS' "Bataan Rescue". Heartbreaking, what those POWs endured. :( It was very emotional - narrated by some of the suvivors of that camp, as well as some of those who risked their lives to get them out.
Thank you, brave men and women, then and now, for your sacrifices for our country.
