Latino and immigrant support groups are mobilizing against the proposed Real ID Act, a federal law that would prohibit states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Immigrant support groups say Real ID would make roads less safe and could erode national security, not improve it.
"It will make millions of people that live in our nation hide even more," said Gustavo Torres, executive director of Casa de Maryland, a Latino advocacy group. "They are going to keep driving, keep working, but now they are going to be even more scared to participate in our society, to cooperate with police on crime issues."
Casa de Maryland, the National Council of La Raza and other groups hope to draw as many as 5,000 immigrants to a protest rally tomorrow afternoon at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.
State officials said they worry that the act would shift the burden -- and costs -- of immigration enforcement from the federal government to the states. Even states that already require proof of legal presence would have to revamp their systems to meet the more stringent requirements of the Real ID legislation.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation would cost states $100 million over five years to implement.
But Cheye Calvo, director of the transportation committee of the National Council of State Legislatures, said the costs to states could be five to seven times that.
"The cost of verifying these documents alone is incredible," Calvo said. "Then you have training, security standards, equipment, physical upgrades to the licenses, biometrics. This stuff doesn't come free."

Lie. States could issue licenses to illegals, as long as they're not for use as identification, just as authorization to drive. In California, Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D, Mexico City) wants to issue specially-marked driver's licenses to illegals, and has introduced legislation to do so. (He also wants to exempt illegals from the state's vehicle impoundment laws for unlicensed driving, which gives you an idea of how in the tank this guy is for illegals).

California, Assemblyman Gil Cedillo seems to be trying to hedge the outcome of the inevitable; his constituents, e.g Mexican nationals will not be allowed documentation other than passports and visas if they are to remain in the US.
However, his proposal would mean that legal citizens could loose there vehicles if driving without a license but people who are here illegal would be immune to such laws?
This is outrages to even suggest , but then again coming from Gil Cedillo perhaps expected!
Gil Cedillo (former member of the racial separatist organization MECHA) is the same guy that tried to pass a law to force legal residence tax payers to subsidize illegal immigrant CA auto insurance, in effect waving their obligation to pay while at the same time maintain that legal citizens cannot drive on California highways without buying insurance themselves

Yep. His rationale is that illegals would have licenses, if only California would issue them, and that it's unfair of the state to demand that they have what they can't get. What gets me is that his fellow Democrats actually vote in favor of his lunatic proposals. If they had any fear of their constituents they'd think twice about going along with this moonbat. Redistricting reform can't come soon enough.
