What do you know about Hal Lindsey?
Hal Lindsey ^

Posted on 04/19/2005 12:51:42 PM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I have been directed to read Hal Lindsey about the choice of Cardinal Ratzinger and future prophecy.

He appears to be a commentator, but I am getting a funky vibe.

Does anyone know anything about this guy and his prophecies?

Well, not specifically, but he did say it would be "one generation" or 40 years after the formation of Israel...making it 1988...now surely you remember that?

He was wrong there, and certainly wrong about what would happen in the year 2000...

folks here on FR who were totally wacked out more than near any other time

The difference is...your average wacked out person here on FR was led by high-profile people like Lindsey into error. They don't claim to be prophets.

By contrast, Lindsey claims to have the word of the Lord. He doesn't obviously.

That is right. Keep your eyes on Christ, and you won't go wrong!

I've heard him say often is that over the years, he has had to rethink previous ideas about The Word because of his missunderstandings, BUT in every case, these missunderstandings came about because he had not taken the Bible literally enough.

Exactly. It's always good to meet another Misslerite. I got to meet him myself about a year and a half ago and chat with him at a group lunch. He's a fantastic guy, and as nice in person as he sounds on his tapes.

My favorite for end-time prophesy is Billye Brim. Here is her URL: http://www.billyebrim.org

She travels to Israel on a regular basis and even speaks Hebrew. I've known about her ministry for 20 years. She's a strong prayer warrior .. and I believe she preaches the truth about the end-times.

My oh my....maybe I'm thick...but I don't understand your comment to me....Sorry....Oh Hal just ain't got it...he's blinded by 'doctrines and traditions of men.' Scripturally his interpretations of prophecy stinks.

Reading that bit on Benedict caught me for a minute. Not much on the whole prophecy thing though. It's going to happen and not much I can do it about it. My opinion is it's better to focus on living as Christ instead of worrying about tomorrow.

Inspite of those who claim he has been wrong on prophecy, he has been careful NOT to set dates on anything, only to outline his interpretations of biblical prophecy. One key item that he got RIGHT was that following the fall of communism (early 1990s), he correctly pointed out the militant islam will be the next challenger to democracy, filling the void left by the Soviet Union. He tries to be through in his contemporary research.

You people who insist on a literal interpretation of everything in the Bible are inconsistent. For example, is the 70 weeks of Daniel 9 literally 70 weeks or not? 70 weeks is literally 49 days. Is it literal or not? If not, why insist that everything is literal?

Hal Lindsey combines the best of pseudo theology with science fiction to make comments about the future. No reputable evangelical seminary considers his work to be
of scholarly value other than, perhaps, an example of
a dark pre-occupation regarding eschatology among some
factions of American Protestant Christianity.

I watch him if I need a good laugh.. he really stretches to make news fit in with his interpretation of Prophecy.

After reading this article:

I'm waiting to see how old Hal make the Olive connection..

Maybe he'll find out that the new pope at an olive once... was anointed with olive oil, watched a Popeye cartoon with Oliveoil in it?

Ask yourself 2 questions:

1) Is America mentioned in the Book Of Revelation?

2) A there hurting, sick, lonely hungry people in my community that I can take the of Christ to?

If question number 1 is the most important, then read Hal Lindsey. He has some interesting things to say, but he is what some would call - an angry prophet. I think God is not bent on destruction, but restoration, which can only happen thru the cross and the Resurrection. Jesus said he gave gifts to the Church to spread the Kingdom of God over the whole earth. These gifts are in a package that we need to open and use to reach and touch others, they are not in a suitcase that we take to the airport to catch the first flight out of here so we won't be left behind. I recommend a great book - Glad to be left Behind - by Dudley Hal. Do a google search and you can find it.

IIRC, his interpration of scripture was that the generation born with the state of Israel would not pass before all these biblical prophecys came to fulfillment. there is still debate on what that means. how long does it take for a generation to "pass"? 40 years? 60? 80?
enquiring minds and all...

Your gut feeling is right.

Your BS meter should be also beeping.

The Weather Channel "5-day extended forecast" is as accurate as Hal Linsey's books. If you watch the Weather Channel, you will notice that the Weather Channel keeps correcting the fifth-day forecast because of the inaccuracy of long-term weather forecasts.

Hal Linsey keeps publishing new books with updated "prophecies."

He is too prescriptive and doctrinaire in his assessments. He is tied to a very specific timeline that supposedly started in 1948 with the creation of the current state of Israel. He is not open to other possibilities, such as:
* That this "Israel" is not the prophecied one.
* That time frames cannot be specifically predicted - that even if the real "new" Israel started in '48, that the subsequent sequence of events may take an unknown amount of time.
* That "Israel" may involve either the specific state of Israel or, the state of Israel plus world wide Jewry, and supporters of world wide Jewry.
* The role of the US - so many possibilities.
* Etc.
