Why Liberals Love Gun Control
MichNews.com ^ | 11 January, 2005 | Justin Darr

The goal of gun control is not to actually control guns and make the world a safer place, but to control people. It is not as important for you can pass a criminal background check so much as it is that you feel obligated to ask the state for permission to buy a gun. Liberals know gun control laws will not stop criminals, but it will erode the sense of independence and self reliance of regular people until they feel that they can do nothing that does not meet government approval.

That's a given

Has absolutely nothing to do with crime prevention that is a ruse they use

Just like the phony stem cell issue isn't really about curing anything but pushing abortion

I don't really think it is a gun control issue per se, as much as it is a government control issue. Liberal politicians in my part of the world (Columbia, Missouri) favour government control of anything and everything. The motivation behind this historically is government control:

Common sense dictates that gun control laws will only affect law-abiding citizens whose interest is defending oneself from harm, because criminals by definition do not obey the law, and no matter what will obtain a firearm by any means necessary. Case in point, one of the Columbine shooters used a TEC-9, a gun, at the time was completely banned nationwide.

I think gun control just evolved to the liberal position. However, I don't think gun-control is the liberal issue inasmuch as it is government control over the people.

1961.. They only wanted to register handguns. Long guns would not be affected. And a ban on five shot bolt action army surplus rifles as they cut into the profits of American gun makers.

1964...They wanted to register ALL guns and ban 5 shot army surplus rifles and "saturday night specials, "The choice of criminals".

1968..The gun control act of 1968 passed baning the importation of army surplus weapons and small handguns.

1971..They wanted to ban ONLY saturday night specials". Good handguns would not be affected.

1976..They only wanted to ban ALL handguns. Rifles and shotguns would not be affected.

1981..They wanted to ban All handguns. Rifles would not be affected!
The day after Reagan was shot Lee Grant was on Good Morning America and demanded...."The NRA is a rifle organization. They should give up their handguns and can keep their rifles! (Note:America was awash in so-called assault riles at the time.)

1988...Demands for the ban on assault rifles!
1994 ..Assault rifles banned for ten years..

They lied to us in 1961.
They lied to us in '64.
They lied to us in '68.
They lied to us in '71, 76, and 81.
And they are lieing to you now!

"...All I can figure is that liberals tend to be city-folk and city-folk are around lots of people all the time, where carrying your own weapon can't really protect you, so they figure just don't let anyone have the weapons..."

How do you figure that carrying a gun "around lots of people" won't protect you? That's, excuse the term, liberal nonsense.

If some scumbag in a crowd has a gun and wants to use it specifically on you, he's got to get close enough to YOU to use it. If HE can use HIS gun in a crowd, so can YOU. Now shooting in a crowd (versus shooting into a crowd) requires some forethought, training, and discipline, but you can minimize the chances of injury to unintended targets.

Liberals mostly want gun control because they project their own fears and hostility about guns and others upon the rest of us who aren't mentally handicapped by the disease of Liberalism.

Socialists also relish the thought of the unarmed righteous being killed by evil criminals.

They get off on it, really, they do.

I was just saying that's what they might be thinking. I don't know for sure, because, though I consider myself a liberal, I don't hold with that position. I was just trying to figure out how gun control became associated with liberalism at all. I don't know anything about the history of gun control in America, maybe I'll go read up on it and post it someday.

It sounds like you could be arguing from a classical liberalism school of thought as opposed to this post-modern, relativistic liberal school of thought.

Classic liberalism though, I would suspect has roots pre-FDR. Classical liberalism does not espouse pro gun-control views.

Wow.

I just went to do a little reading on this. The word liberal has a long, convoluted history. I still don't see how anyone calling themselves liberal could support gun control, but now that I've skimmed the history of the word a bit, it doesn't drop my jaw anymore.

Click on the link to get the article. I don't know why it was excerpted, but all this copyright-infringement scat is not something I've understood well anyway.

A good, short article that sums up many of the deeper moral issues of gun control that many of us are already well aware of. Always good to get reminded of what the end-game really is.

1994 ..Assault rifles banned for ten years..

Sorry to nitpick, but assault rifles have been tightly controlled since 1934 because, by definition, an assault rifle is capable of full automatic fire. In 1994 assault weapons were defined as semi-auto, military look alike rifles with more than 2 of 5 evil features and they were banned for 10 years.

There are many thousands of people murdered each year despite the fact that murder has ALWAYS been illegal.

Liberals have very good reason to fear an armed populace. Europe is full of examples where those on the left were the ones first lined up agains the wall and shot by people excercising individual freedoms.

Why does not all elected officials who want guncontrol, post gun free zones on their front lawns so they can easily be burglarized.

Right now the burlars and robbers are taking a chance, why not make it easier for them??

A mala in se law. Of course, if liberals do not consider unborn babies human in any sense of the word, or even 3/4 born babies, or old, aged people, then I guess murder in and of itself is not illegal. When relativistic liberals start drawing the line at where murder is bad in and of itself, we start having serious problems... but that's a debate for another time.

You made a fabulous point though. :^)

Hi LTM-

"...Europe is full of examples where those on the left were the ones first lined up agains the wall and shot by people excercising individual freedoms..."

You might need to toss in some [/sarcasm] tags for the benefit of those not too quick on the uptake. I agree, no over-reaching, centralized governments were involved!
