I don't really think it is a gun control issue per se, as much as it is a government control issue. Liberal politicians in my part of the world (Columbia, Missouri) favour government control of anything and everything. The motivation behind this historically is government control:

Common sense dictates that gun control laws will only affect law-abiding citizens whose interest is defending oneself from harm, because criminals by definition do not obey the law, and no matter what will obtain a firearm by any means necessary. Case in point, one of the Columbine shooters used a TEC-9, a gun, at the time was completely banned nationwide.

I think gun control just evolved to the liberal position. However, I don't think gun-control is the liberal issue inasmuch as it is government control over the people.
