BALTIMORE (AP) The president of the NAACP is stepping down as head of the nation's oldest and largest civil rights group, according to newspaper reports. Kweisi Mfume, who has been president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since 1996, planned to make the announcement Tuesday, The (Baltimore) Sun, citing an anonymous source, reported in Tuesday editions. The resignation was also reported Tuesday in a USA Today opinions column by weekly contributor DeWayne Wickham.

Last month, the NCAAP announced that the Internal Revenue Service was reviewing the organization's federal tax-exempt status. NAACP chairman Julian Bond said the investigation stems from a July speech he gave that was critical of President Bush. Tax-exempt organizations are required to remain nonpartisan.

Isn't U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Commissioner Mary Frances Berry going to be in the streets pretty soon? May not be a bad idea. Berry is a witch with a capital B and manages to piss off almost as many liberals as she does with everybody else. She's also a terrible organizer and her heavy handed self centered management style has caused an internal rift in virtually every single organization she's ever headed up.
It would be a dream come true for her to be the spokesman of the NAACP. Mfume is noxious but he's also somewhat charismatic...at least to the degree that many people listen when he's interviewed on the news. With Berry you get a shrill, uppity, heavy handed, butt ugly banshee who alienates everybody outside of her organization plus half the people inside it. She'd be the much needed final nail in the coffin of an irrelevant, bigotted, and corrupt appendage of the DNC.

Now that it has finally happened, I can share the story with you as it was told to me. I am a former member of the NAACP and left after Bond and Mfume came in. Bond has always been the power behind the curtain and has a rabid hatred of Republicans. The rift between Bond and Mfume started after Mufume selected Condi Rice for the NAACP's President's award in 2002. Mfume kept the selection secret until the last minute and once Bond found out he went nuts stating that "What the hell was a Republican doing winning an NAACP award." The rift continued to grow as Bond stacked the board with his allies and started making statements that threaten the group's tax expemt status, with the IRS investigation being the last straw, plus the fact that Mfume was final forced to come to Condi Rice's defense when John Sylvester made his racist statements. Mfume was well aware that with control of the board that Bond was going to see that his contract was not renewed. The board had brought Mufume in to be the front man because Bond is totally out of control, but after Bond was able to secure major funds from groups like MoveOn.org and Soros, so Mufume saw the writing on the wall. I am not telling what I think I am telling what I know, as quite and kept that it is Mfume and I happen to be friends(we may disagree on politics, but we are friends who respect each other)

This could be the beginning of the end of this once worthy organization, now reduced to race-baiting and hate mongering.
Losing their tax exempt status will kill their funding. Now, if only the IRS would go after Jessie Jackass.

Good riddance to a racist, bigoted, hate-America lowlife.

So, the real bad guy is Julian Bond, and getting rid of MFume solves nothing?

Thanks for the inside scoop. It's getting where there are none on the left that can listen to reason anymore -- Mfume's a dying breed.
I'm guessing that Bond thinks he doesn't need his tax-exempt status with $oro$ money (or he can scream "racism" effectively when it's removed) - but I wouldn't expect Soros and Moveon to keep that gravy flowing as the election is over.
Trueblackman, as an insider, do you have an inkling of who may be chosen as a front man? Do you expect a Bondclone?
To: stands2reason
Well I could not tell you, who would replace Mfume, but Bond will not bring in anyone he can't control.

Thanks for the 411. I never thought of Mfume as a rabble-rousing race-baiter. He certainly wasn't when he was in Congress. I am not surprised that he finally came to blows with Julian Bond. That guy is nuts. He probably will hire some nutjob like Mary Berry.
I don't think Mfume has much of a shot at the Senate though. I heard from a top political source in Maryland over a year ago that the deal has already been cut for Sarbanes to retire and Al Wynn to be the Democrat nominee.

"I heard from a top political source in Maryland over a year ago that the deal has already been cut for Sarbanes to retire and Al Wynn to be the Democrat nominee."
I didn't know that Wynn had statewide aspirations. The rumor I had heard was that Mfume would run if Sarbanes retired, although maybe Ben Cardin would oppose him in the primary.
If Sarbanes retires, I would love for Lt. Governor Michael Steele to be the GOP Senate nominee. He is a solid conservative who will ensure high turnout in the Panhandle and in the Eastern Shore (which will have the additional effect of aiding Gov. Ehrlich's reelection), and as a black man from the DC suburbs, he would make it difficult for Mfume and especially Wynn to get the types of margins they would need among black voters and among Montco whites in order to win. If Ben Cardin is the Democrat nominee, it would be a more difficult race for Steele, but my money would still be on the Lt. Governor.

I would hope Steele can do better than wrapping up the Eastern Sho'. I could carry that "sh$thouse" Eastern Sho!
To win the Senate, Steele would have to deliver PG county (where he lives) and make a serious dent in Montgomery and Baltimore Counties. He is one impressive guy! I hope this will happen.
