Now that it has finally happened, I can share the story with you as it was told to me. I am a former member of the NAACP and left after Bond and Mfume came in. Bond has always been the power behind the curtain and has a rabid hatred of Republicans. The rift between Bond and Mfume started after Mufume selected Condi Rice for the NAACP's President's award in 2002. Mfume kept the selection secret until the last minute and once Bond found out he went nuts stating that "What the hell was a Republican doing winning an NAACP award." The rift continued to grow as Bond stacked the board with his allies and started making statements that threaten the group's tax expemt status, with the IRS investigation being the last straw, plus the fact that Mfume was final forced to come to Condi Rice's defense when John Sylvester made his racist statements. Mfume was well aware that with control of the board that Bond was going to see that his contract was not renewed. The board had brought Mufume in to be the front man because Bond is totally out of control, but after Bond was able to secure major funds from groups like MoveOn.org and Soros, so Mufume saw the writing on the wall. I am not telling what I think I am telling what I know, as quite and kept that it is Mfume and I happen to be friends(we may disagree on politics, but we are friends who respect each other)

So, the real bad guy is Julian Bond, and getting rid of MFume solves nothing?

Thanks for the inside scoop. It's getting where there are none on the left that can listen to reason anymore -- Mfume's a dying breed.
I'm guessing that Bond thinks he doesn't need his tax-exempt status with $oro$ money (or he can scream "racism" effectively when it's removed) - but I wouldn't expect Soros and Moveon to keep that gravy flowing as the election is over.
Trueblackman, as an insider, do you have an inkling of who may be chosen as a front man? Do you expect a Bondclone?

Thanks for the 411. I never thought of Mfume as a rabble-rousing race-baiter. He certainly wasn't when he was in Congress. I am not surprised that he finally came to blows with Julian Bond. That guy is nuts. He probably will hire some nutjob like Mary Berry.
I don't think Mfume has much of a shot at the Senate though. I heard from a top political source in Maryland over a year ago that the deal has already been cut for Sarbanes to retire and Al Wynn to be the Democrat nominee.
