My grandson, of whom I was the Guardian, left us for basic last March. Today, while off-duty he was able to come home for the weekend. I am so very proud of all of you young people who realize how much we need you all.

Tough out the tough stuff and roll with the punches. May your biggest trial be your separation from your loved ones, and may that be tempered by time off to be with them.

The best advise I got prior to basic was to giggle at most of the stuff. Once you're done, plenty of it is pretty funny. Good luck - and the best to you!

GO AIR FORCE!

God bless you and have fun. I was in the Navy and boot camp wasn't bad at all. The Air Force has more babes than the Navy, well back then it did.

Work hard, enjoy yourself. And thanks.

I recall arriving at Lackland quite well. It was about 1:00 a.m. when our bus pulled in from the airport. The bus was as quiet as could be and a sergeant stepped on and started scraeming "Shut the %$#@ up!!!" They took us for breakfast and they were cooking all types of eggs and placing them on top of the counter for us to pick out. I grabbed scrambled eggs and when I bit into them they were nothing but water. But the 6 weeks went by really fast. And, don't worry, it grows back!

Best of luck to you. You really will enjoy it.

Good luck! I survived it; you can too! Best time of my life...though it may not always feel that way while you're living through it, LOL!

Keep your head down. Become invisible, though integral. Don't be a smart-ass. Be part of the TEAM. LISTEN to your drills, and absorb all they tell you...they're giving you real-world experience that may one day save your own butt, or the butt of the guy or gal next to you.

Do all that, and you'll be just fine.

God bless, and thank you for your service. I'll give you the same advice I got when I went in: Keep your mouth shut and don't let them know you're there.

It was about 1:00 a.m. when our bus pulled in from the airport.

As I understand it, bringing in the new recruits at that kind of late/early hour is routine. Is that true? Dont they ever for the new ones to arrive at a base somewhere around lunchtime or some more reasonable hour?

LOL

Mine came through so fast in AIT that the Captain called me in to find out why. I had no idea at the time that my dad and the company he worked for was involved with the Jennifer Project (retrieving a Russian sub). All they had to do was update his file for me.

Basic Training is all one big mind game and remember that, but do listen to your DI's because these are the men and women, who run the AF and will keep your ass alive if you are caught in combat. Some days will seem easy, some days will seem hard, but keep pushing yourself and know that the DI's will be looking for those natural leaders after the first week. As I use to tell my guys, there is no I in Team and natural leaders help out their fellow airman in duty time and off time. Make sure you keep us Freepers abreast of your training and we are all proud of you and your choice to serve.
