Despite pushing for bans against so-called assault weapons, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry now admits he owns a "Communist Chinese assault rifle.''
''My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam,'' Kerry told Outdoor Life magazine for its October issue. ''I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.''
When asked by the New York Times for more information about the weapon, Kerry spokesman Michael Meehan said Kerry was a registered gun owner in Massachusetts.
Meehan said Thursday he was unable to ask the senator about the rifle because of Kerry's hoarse voice, and the Times reports he did not respond to further inquiries.
Kerry is a hunter who voiced support for the recently expired assault-weapons ban, and often tells citizens he's never met anyone who wanted to use an AK-47 to shoot a deer.
Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the National Rifle Association, told the Times the comment in Outdoor Life made Kerry's support of the ban disingenuous.
''It's OK for John Kerry to own these kinds of firearms, but it's not OK for John Q. Public?'' Arulanandam said, adding Kerry could be subject to court-martial if the gun were brought home from the war as a souvenir. ''He certainly owes people an explanation as to why there's a double standard.''
Let's see him explain this one.
I smell a hypocrite from John Kerry. This guy just contradicts himself.
So is it an SKS or an illegal AK-47 that "common" people would go to jail for?
Heheh
now now ...of course kerry knows the dif between a firing pin and a bowling pin.
Its a little known fact that kerry was in vietnam...no no realy its true...he doesnt talk about it much though /sarcasm
do as i say not as i do?
Gun bans are for the little people.
Poor smuck - all that good money from wifey and this is the best flack he can hire? Gee, Meehan. Have your studmuffin write his answer down... or maybe his wrist is too limp to use a pencil?
A_R
He couldn't write the answer?
And then the dog ate the homework.
Ya know, he could have just had Kerry stomp his hoof once for yes, twice for no...
''I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.''
This guy is just a liar. I don't own a gun, I'll never own a gun, I'm very pro-second amendment, but I don't know much about guns. But I DO know this, no one would describe a rifle as a "communist chinese" rifle. Who makes the AK-47s? The Russians, no? Have you ever heard it describes as a "Communist Russian Ak-47"? Don't the Israelis make the Uzi? Have you ever heard it describes as "the Zionist Israeli Uzi".
Maybe he's on drugs.
Hoarse voice, horse-face and a horse's a$$.
Exactly how it will be percieved in the swing states. This destroys Kerry.
Kerry was in Vietnam?
i'm confused ... is this a flip or a flop?
Kerry own's one of everything. He's just a regular Joe like you and I (not).
Actually - a commie assault rifle is cheap cr@p.
How about that $6,000 bicycle he "did not" wreck on ?
This little people hopes they never come to inspect our basement...no, no, no, precious. They is bad mens and we needs to have superior firepower, precious.
He claims he was, but that was either just before or just after he was in Cambodia on Christmas.
Well, Kerry could have been lying to score points with his audience of the moment. This is the most likely explanation.
Or, he could have whatever license it takes in MA to own an "assault rifle" and keeps it in a safe somewhere, and renews the lic whenever it expires (you need to take a course of some sort, right?). This is very unKerrylike. Someone should ask him what type of licence he has and in what city it was issued.
He could have had a real Chinese Full-Auto AK47 with bayonet and so on, demilled and is a wallhanger souvenir to remind people that he served. This is Kerrylike, especially if he forgets to tell people it is demilled and he bought it at Cabelas on sale. "There I was, standing in the steaming jungle, when up comes this Cong general yelling at the top of his lungs. I unslung my Huey and fired a single shot over his head, and he surrendered, handing me the rifle you see now on the wall."
