''I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.''

This guy is just a liar. I don't own a gun, I'll never own a gun, I'm very pro-second amendment, but I don't know much about guns. But I DO know this, no one would describe a rifle as a "communist chinese" rifle. Who makes the AK-47s? The Russians, no? Have you ever heard it describes as a "Communist Russian Ak-47"? Don't the Israelis make the Uzi? Have you ever heard it describes as "the Zionist Israeli Uzi".

Maybe he's on drugs.

Kerry own's one of everything. He's just a regular Joe like you and I (not).

Actually - a commie assault rifle is cheap cr@p.

How about that $6,000 bicycle he "did not" wreck on ?

Just a trivial point: at the time, it was common practice to refer to Viet Cong weapons as "ChiComm," as not many people in the West knew who Simonov or Kalashnikov were or cared much about the model designations. If he picked one up in Viet Nam, and if he had it properly demilled and got the paperwork to bring it home as a trophy, and if he has had it hanging on the wall for the last 35 years, then he might indeed think of it as a "ChiComm" weapon.

The AK-47 (Automat Kalashnikov 1947) is only the first of a long line of AKs. It had a machined receiver, while many of the later versions of the same weapon had and have a stamped receiver. The later versions were very easy to manuufacture and the Chinese were authorized to manufacture them. The Chinese were one of the main weapons suppliers to the North Vietnamese. Hence, it's quite likely that any NVA AK which Kerry captured and brought home was made by the Chinese. To further muddy the waters, the Chinese also manufactured a large number of SKS semi-auto rifles.
