So is it an SKS or an illegal AK-47 that "common" people would go to jail for?

So is it an SKS or an illegal AK-47 that "common" people would go to jail for? Describing it as a Communist Chinese assault rifle certainly implies that he brought a full-auto AK-47 back from Vietnam as a war souvenir. I have to wonder what Navy regs at the time said in regard to such items.

Iraqis can have fully automatic AK-47's.
But we can't.
Go figure.

Right. Would some of our fellow posters who served in combat in Vietnam while Kerry was there please let us know if he'd be more likely to have captured a semi-auto SKS (legal without Federal registration and permitting) or an AK with full automatic capability (legal only with Federal registration and permitting and possibly illegal to bring home). Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge.
