Minneapolis Star Tribune censors IPW cartoonist

IowaPresidentialWatch.com’s political cartoonist, Linda Eddy, has been censored by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Eddy distributes her cartoons by email and regularly sends them to the Tribune. Her latest, showing John Kerry during his 1971 Senate testimony, is titled “Silencing Veterans since 1971” and shows an American soldier in Kerry’s hand, his head covered.

Tribune Deputy Editorial Page Editor B. James Boyd responded to Eddy’s latest cartoon by banning any future editorials from the artist:

“Please take me off your e-mail list. Your latest statements about Kerry are too much. He said no such thing in 1971. His whole testimony was an appeal on behalf of veterans.”

Eddy responded to Boyd’s email:

“You are further proof of the silencing of any dissenting view on what John Kerry really said back in 1971. You are further proof of the denial of Freedom of Speech to those with whom you disagree.”

End of story? No! Back came yet another response from Tribune editor B. James Boyd – sent not once, but twice to Eddy:

“read kerry's testimony. Find one complete quote which supports your
claim. Just one.”

Eddy’s response:

“Obviously you are incapable of doing your own good, hard journalistic work.
As soon as I clear my schedule, I will respond... probably by tomorrow.”

The following is the actual email exchanges between Eddy and Minneapolis Star Tribune editor B. James Boyd:

I will gladly remove you from the email list.

You are further proof of the silencing of any dissenting view on what John Kerry really said back in 1971. You are further proof of the denial of Freedom of Speech to those with whom you disagree.

I just hate it when Media like you continue to promote lies. John Kerry's whole testimony was NOT an appeal on behalf of veterans. Kerry accused American troops in Vietnam of committing henious, barbaric, criminal acts on a regular, daily basis. He lied about American troops in Vietnam, he lied about what was happening in Vietnam, he lied about going into Cambodia on Christmas 1968... As the veterans say, Kerry lied while good men died. The fact is that American soldiers hated Kerry back in 1971 for what he falsely testified about them, and still hate Kerry to this day for these lies.

Kerry was a part of the meeting in Detroit, Michigan, where Veterans Against the War through the financial support of Jane Fonda and her friends (in something that has come to be known as Winter Soldier) gathered the information that Kerry gave before the Senate committee in 1971.

It has since been proven that most (if not all) of that personal testimony was not true and many giving testimony were not veterans. Furthermore, most of those who were veterans had not been to Vietnam. It has further been proven that among Kerry's board members of Veterans Against the War most had not been to Vietnam and many of them lied about their service record.

Then there is this whopper by Kerry - John Kerry said on April 18, 1971 on NBC's "Meet the Press":

"There are all kinds of atrocities, and I would have to say that, yes, yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed in     that I took part in shootings in free fire zones. I conducted harassment and interdiction fire. I used 50 calibre machine guns, which we were granted and ordered     to use, which were our only weapon against people. I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages."

If it were true, then Kerry is a war criminal.

The real great lie is that there is a free, fair and objective press. You have once again proven that is not true. You, the press and John Kerry continue to silence America's Vietnam veterans. This henious denial of Freedom of Speech must stop.

I will see what I can do to share your denial of truth and handling of a dissenting view with the rest of the world.

By the way, my cartoons have been chosen for exhibition by the Arizona State Museum of Art for the exhibit "Art and Democracy" -- the location of the last presidential debate.

sincerely,

Linda Eddy

I don't send him every one I do. Due to the reasons you state... volume, and such. Regarding printing out and snail mailing... you don't understand digital art, the current state of the industry and what's required. I do. When the London Sunday Telegraph requested my work, trust me... they had to have it sent by email. Not because they are overseas, but because of the need for printing 'crispness'. It also saves them precious time from having to scan it, photo color correct it, etc, etc.

sKerry "silenced" veterans when he allowed his words to be used by the enemy for tortures and, yes, killings. The point is that he didn't allow them their say in 1971 and he's refusing to let them have their say now.

I don't think the NV ever asked for his permission to use those words. I don't see how that "silences" POWs--in the abscence of such words, the NV would allow them free speech? He didn't do anything in 1971 to prevent other veterans from speaking. The point is, the cartoon was dishonest and didn't even make an attempt at humor. It was a lame cartoon all around. There's no defending it on factual bases, on from an emotional standpoint.

Part of the point here is that Boyd chose to continue the discussion. Had he said simply that Eddy's cartoons are not the kind of material he is seeking, and that she would have better opportunities elsewhere, it might have been a bit more palatable. And in any case, he is certainly within his rights. It's not censorship

But taken in a greater context of his intellectual dishonesty (~post #138?), this guy's response begs a response. He is trying to justify himself by demanding a 'single' instance of Kerry's harm in his testimony, when the truth is that Kerry harmed the veterans by a whole visual and vocal political process.

He can do what he wants, but as you say, a whole lot of electronic jeering is in order.

My email to Boyd.

Dear Mr. Boyd:

If one needed further proof the MWDP, (Media Wing Democrat Party) formerly known as the MSM, (Main Slime Media) and John Kerry are in complete agreement to ban free speech and expression, one needs look no further than your actions regarding Ms. Linda Eddy.

I find it so strange Kerry's attempts to silence the SBVfT consisted of threatening with law suits and legal action the television stations not to run their political adds, threatened legal action against any book stores that dare offer for sale their book, "Unfit for Command", threaten the publisher of the book with legal action for printing the book.

It would appear the Nazi propaganda minister, Herr Joseph Goebbels will prosper very well under a Kerry presidency. On second thought, he now appears to be peeking out from under the bed sheets there in Iowa today.

Now in lock step with Kerry and the democrats, you have silenced Linda Eddy to prevent the people of Iowa of being presented with an opposing view you disagree with. Shame on you Mr. Boyd, as a person, and as someone who profess to be one who should cherish the FIRST AMENDMENT.

THE OLD MEDIA IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE NEW MEDIA.

Have a nice day & happy election returns.

Ah. I didn't know that. Thanks for the clarification.

Regarding printing out and snail mailing... you don't understand digital art, the current state of the industry and what's required.

Nonsense. I've been working in digital art since the early 1990s. I also own two state-of-the-art printers and know full well what their capabilities are in terms of printing out digital art.

When the London Sunday Telegraph requested my work, trust me... they had to have it sent by email.

Yes, I understand that. I've had my works published elsewhere as well. (By the way, I am duly impressed that your work has been featured overseas. Good show!)

My point remains that what's going on here isn't censorship. As another poster pointed out, only the government can censor. Every other avenue of publication is perfectly at liberty to refuse any (and even all) submissions if they so choose...however, they do so at the mercy of the American consumer.

Great response to the editor's BS reply, Linda!

See this group of Swift Boats patrolling together? They are NOT SERVING together!!! Only the ones on the SAME BOAT are serving together! Each group of personnel on each boat know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the personnel on the other boat, PERIOD !! If they say they do, they are Republican LIARS !! Unless the one talking is a DemocRAT. Then he is telling the truth, of course.

You are simply wrong.

How am I wrong? You don't submit political cartoons to major publications by throwing the email of their editorial editor on you bulk mail list. Even if what you're doing isn't spamming, don't you see how he could think it is?
