Minneapolis Star Tribune censors IPW cartoonist

IowaPresidentialWatch.com’s political cartoonist, Linda Eddy, has been censored by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Eddy distributes her cartoons by email and regularly sends them to the Tribune. Her latest, showing John Kerry during his 1971 Senate testimony, is titled “Silencing Veterans since 1971” and shows an American soldier in Kerry’s hand, his head covered.

Tribune Deputy Editorial Page Editor B. James Boyd responded to Eddy’s latest cartoon by banning any future editorials from the artist:

“Please take me off your e-mail list. Your latest statements about Kerry are too much. He said no such thing in 1971. His whole testimony was an appeal on behalf of veterans.”

Eddy responded to Boyd’s email:

“You are further proof of the silencing of any dissenting view on what John Kerry really said back in 1971. You are further proof of the denial of Freedom of Speech to those with whom you disagree.”

End of story? No! Back came yet another response from Tribune editor B. James Boyd – sent not once, but twice to Eddy:

“read kerry's testimony. Find one complete quote which supports your
claim. Just one.”

Eddy’s response:

“Obviously you are incapable of doing your own good, hard journalistic work.
As soon as I clear my schedule, I will respond... probably by tomorrow.”

The following is the actual email exchanges between Eddy and Minneapolis Star Tribune editor B. James Boyd:

I will gladly remove you from the email list.

You are further proof of the silencing of any dissenting view on what John Kerry really said back in 1971. You are further proof of the denial of Freedom of Speech to those with whom you disagree.

I just hate it when Media like you continue to promote lies. John Kerry's whole testimony was NOT an appeal on behalf of veterans. Kerry accused American troops in Vietnam of committing henious, barbaric, criminal acts on a regular, daily basis. He lied about American troops in Vietnam, he lied about what was happening in Vietnam, he lied about going into Cambodia on Christmas 1968... As the veterans say, Kerry lied while good men died. The fact is that American soldiers hated Kerry back in 1971 for what he falsely testified about them, and still hate Kerry to this day for these lies.

Kerry was a part of the meeting in Detroit, Michigan, where Veterans Against the War through the financial support of Jane Fonda and her friends (in something that has come to be known as Winter Soldier) gathered the information that Kerry gave before the Senate committee in 1971.

It has since been proven that most (if not all) of that personal testimony was not true and many giving testimony were not veterans. Furthermore, most of those who were veterans had not been to Vietnam. It has further been proven that among Kerry's board members of Veterans Against the War most had not been to Vietnam and many of them lied about their service record.

Then there is this whopper by Kerry - John Kerry said on April 18, 1971 on NBC's "Meet the Press":

"There are all kinds of atrocities, and I would have to say that, yes, yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed in     that I took part in shootings in free fire zones. I conducted harassment and interdiction fire. I used 50 calibre machine guns, which we were granted and ordered     to use, which were our only weapon against people. I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages."

If it were true, then Kerry is a war criminal.

The real great lie is that there is a free, fair and objective press. You have once again proven that is not true. You, the press and John Kerry continue to silence America's Vietnam veterans. This henious denial of Freedom of Speech must stop.

I will see what I can do to share your denial of truth and handling of a dissenting view with the rest of the world.

By the way, my cartoons have been chosen for exhibition by the Arizona State Museum of Art for the exhibit "Art and Democracy" -- the location of the last presidential debate.

sincerely,

Linda Eddy

Yeah, this Boyd fellow has been receiving my cartoons for months now. He is the deputy editor for the Tribune's editorial page. His request to be removed from emails means I cannot submit cartoons anymore to the editorial page. By the way, my cartoons are digitally done. The only way to submit them is by email. Someone further up commented I was 'spamming'. Not so. This is the correct way to submit, per that paper's own guidelines.

Well, it's been almost an hour since I sent Boyd his 'proof' Kerry quote from the 1971 Senate testimony. Still no response from him.

The issue isn't denying the cartoon. The issue is Mr. Boyd won't accept any future SUBMITS from me because of the cartoon.

To: Jim Boyd

Mr. Boyd, when you ban political cartoons, thought, expression, speech, such as you did to Linda Eddy, you're playing right into the hands of people that want to ban the press. In other words, in the long term, you're cutting your own throat. Clearly, in 1971, Senator John Kerry lied to the American people and Congress. That sir, is indisputable.

Please read the short article below, and tell me, if your not aiding and abetting what happened in Germany in 1933. With people like you, history is destined to repeat itself. It appears you are now a part of SENATOR KERRY'S LIES

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
-- Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

...These were not isolated incidents, but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command...This is a blanket indictment of every military person in Vietnam. Kerry makes no distinction as to when, where, or by whom these crimes are committed - effectively he damns all vets who served in that war....

Kerry is a prime reason that I was greeted back by a United ticket agent in the SF airport after eighteen months at the medical center on Okinawa with "Here's your ticket, babykiller" - the man never stopped to ask had I actually been in Vietnam, seen combat, killed anyone, condoned atrocities...nothing. I was in uniform, and I was a babykiller. This is what Kerry wanted - he can nuance his statements any way he wants now, but then he was about turning the country against the war and those who fought it - now, it just may be that a good part of the country is on the way to turning against him......

Hate to tell you this; its only censorship if the gubermint does it. When a private media organ does it then its just editorial comment.

That does not mean we can point and jeer when they do it though. I think that a whole lot of electronic pointing and jeering is in order.

Yeah, this Boyd fellow has been receiving my cartoons for months now.

How many did he use?

He is the deputy editor for the Tribune's editorial page. His request to be removed from emails means I cannot submit cartoons anymore to the editorial page.

Not unless he specifically said you can no longer e-mail him. And considering that you've been having a running e-mail dialogue with him since his original request to be taken off your list, I wouldn't say you can't e-mail him.

I think what's going on here is that he doesn't want to receive notices for every work you do. Considering the sheer volume of your prolific work, that's not an entirely unreasonable request. But there's certainly nothing that I've seen that says you can't send in the occasional editorial; just that the guy wants off your mailing list.

By the way, my cartoons are digitally done. The only way to submit them is by email.

Actually, you could also printed them out and mail them via snail mail. So e-mail isn't the only way to submit them.

Someone further up commented I was 'spamming'.

Now that's just wrong on their part and I'd certainly spank them where their fur is the thinnest over that charge.

see post #141 regarding spamming.

Done. I still think it's spamming. Submissions to major newspapers are not done by sending out an email to multiple recipients. This guy at the Star Tribune knew he was on a list, so he correctly identified it as spam and asked you to stop.

Perhaps you are a strong person who, upon returning to the US to thrown eggs and spit, can raise his voice in a protest of righteousness. But most people aren't that strong. To have hatred heaped upon you has a silencing effect. Especially when there is no real support to be found, even in veterans organizations.

Kerry contributed mightily to that atmosphere, not simply by one or two phrases, but by his vocal and visible leadership of a movement designed to demoralize and demonize the armed forces, and in the bargain, the veterans of Vietnam.

No right to be published but what about the right to e-mail the opinion editor or the paper? hmmm? They can print whatever they want, but I think it is a joke when they ask for opinions and then ban someone for not having the right one. If the e-mails were extremely abusive (hey a degree of abuse is deserved since they dish it out) that would be different.

sKerry "silenced" veterans when he allowed his words to be used by the enemy for tortures and, yes, killings. The point is that he didn't allow them their say in 1971 and he's refusing to let them have their say now.
