Vietnam Lies (more piles of Harkin)
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 19, 2004 | Editorial

We wish this Presidential election had nothing at all to do with Vietnam. There were good people who served and good people who didn't, good people who supported the war and good people who protested it. What happened really shouldn't be an issue more than 30 years later unless you lie about it. So why do the Democrats keep bringing Vietnam up, and to their own detriment?

John Kerry, for starters, has made his four-month service in that country the centerpiece of his campaign. But just last week his staff was forced to admit the Senator had been inaccurate, to put it charitably, when he claimed on multiple occasions to have spent Christmas Eve of 1968 in Cambodia while (he also said) the U.S. government was lying about his presence there.

Now comes Tom Harkin. On Monday the Iowa Senator lashed out at Dick Cheney, claiming the Vice President had no right to criticize Mr. Kerry's policies for the war on terror because Mr. Cheney had a deferment back then: "When I hear this coming from Dick Cheney, who was a coward, who would not serve during the Vietnam War, it makes my blood boil."

"Coward"? Such a comment would take chutzpah coming from anyone. But Senator Harkin is a proven fabricator when it comes to his own Vietnam-era record, as shown during his own failed 1992 Presidential bid....

It turned out Mr. Harkin had not seen combat and was stationed in Japan....

Am I the only one who is seeing a pattern here??? What makes these "honorable men" (sarcasm off) think that they can lie about their military career and think that they will get a pass? Is there some kind of unwritten rule for Rats that they must lie to get ahead? Oh sorry I forgot Rat rule #1 "the ends justifies the means".

There are Vietnam heroes, many of whom never came back or who had serious problems after they did. Then there are shameful opportunists like Harkin, who merely plays a war hero on tv but wants us to believe he was the real thing.

It makes me ashamed to be from the same state he is a Senator of. By the way, he is a carpet bagger and not from here.

There are also plenty of essentially bad people who served honorably in the military, sometimes in combat, and sometimes not. Having served in combat does not buy you blanket immunity from ever being questioned or criticized about anything for the rest of your life.

Why do they think they can get a pass? Because they do. It works. 50% of our population not only believe the lies, they attack the truth seekers.

The liars embellish or fabricate war stories and win big. It works. Many are rewarded by supporting the liar and attacking the truth seeker. The liar wins big. The enablers win big. There is safety in numbers - the Dems get 50% of the vote.

Our society has been preached to by liberals that there is no absolute right or wrong. Everything is a shade of grey. They are all victims. Their stories are all courageous. So, congratulations; they've won over half of us. The casualty of their great plan is the truth. The true victims are the truth seekers.

Harkin, and by silence, Kerry, calls Cheney a "coward" for going by the rules in place from the 1940s-on. Why, oh why doesn't the Bush campaign ask the Kerry one to apologize to the hundreds of thousands of good Americans who went by the rules and obtained student deferments, sometimes running out of deferments and entering the service and sometimes avoiding service. They were not "cowards." Or the hundreds of thousands of good Americans who also went by the rules and served honorably in the National Guard or Reserves. They were neither "cowards" nor "draft dodgers."
