Book torpedoes Kerry's strategy
Washington Times ^ | 8/11/04 | Charles Hurt

John Kerry's strategy of making his military service a centerpiece of his presidential campaign is under fire with the release of "Unfit for Command," which arrives in bookstores this week.
The book accuses the Democratic nominee of lying about what he saw as a Navy officer during his four months of combat in Vietnam, inflating his own record to garner enough Purple Hearts to go home early and later joining an anti-war group that discussed plans for assassinating members of the U.S. Congress.
" 'Unfit for Command' is a shocking indictment of a politician who slandered his fellow veterans, danced on the edge of treason, and has shamelessly exaggerated his own war service for political ends," proclaims the dust jacket for the book, written by John E. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi and published by Regnery.
Mr. O'Neill was the officer who succeeded Mr. Kerry as commander of PCF-94. It was aboard that Navy "swift boat" that Mr. Kerry patrolled the Mekong River in 1968 and 1969.

Hey, if Kerry now wants to abandon that strategy and talk about his post-Vietnam record, we can do that, too. <|:)~

Asked about the charges contained in the book and whether they would damage Mr. Kerry's campaign, spokesman Chad Clanton e-mailed an Associated Press story in which one of the book's co-authors — Mr. Corsi — apologized for disparaging comments about Catholics, Muslims and the pope he posted on an Internet message board.

The Flip-Flop way to deal with unpleasant facts: Ignore. Attack the messenger. Spin. Ignore. Repeat.

Pathetic.

I'm still waiting for the Slimes article on the allegations. It will likely come as an unflattering book review hit piece.

Is Kerry still mentioning Vietnam? Or is it time for another one week vacation?

That article would pique my curiousity and make me want to read the book. The book is still number 1 on Amazon.

I really doubt that this book will be a factor in the election. The only people that will bother reading it are the ones that have already made up their minds. It's much like Michael Moore's movie, preaching to the choir.

Preaching to the choir is necessary also.

Unlike Moore's flick though it's not lies.

Many Nam Vets are sick at Kerry for using their blood for his career.

Sorry you missed that.

It is not important who reads the book.

It is the quotes that can be taken out of the book and used by others that make the difference.

Also a big difference in the books is that Moore's is full of lies and distortions, while this book relates facts.

No expects this book to sway the Hate Bush crowd. But it could have an impact with swing voters attracted to Kerry because of his war hero credentials. The book might make them give him a closer look. All in all, its not good for a candidate whose main justification for seeking the White House is four months service in Vietnam.

If this book serves no purpose other than allowing vietnam veterans their rightful voice then so be it.

Vietnam veterans have lived with the legacy John Kerry and other like minded smear organizations have forced on then for 35 years, Now they get to voice their side of the story as part of the national debate.

While I was in the service during Vietnam I didn't serve there, but I saw the effect of the post war smear on my friends who did, it was shameful.

The Swiftboat vets deserve to be heard and it is shameful what the media and the democratic party are doing, The same people who have been demonized for all these years are getting smeared again for telling the truth.

All Americans should feel a touch of shame for what is happening and do everything possible to allow these American heros to be heard.

If that's preaching to the choir so be it.

Technical question: Would Kerry's superiors allow Kerry to get his "any excuse" purple hearts in order to get him out of there ASAP? Get rid of Kerry before he kills his own troops (or gets killed by his own).

"...Mr. Cosi - apologized for disparaging comments about Catholics, Muslims and the pope he posted on an Internet message board."

It is my understanding that Mr. Cosi is a Catholic - and a Catholic who has the ability to laugh at himself. His comments were accordingly. Beware of those who lack this so-necessary human attribute - they frequently turn out to be madmen.

I almost believe that this wqhole Vietnam thing is a Kerry put on to detract from the fact that he has done nothing in 19 years of being a Senator.

The media has made every attempt to make this go away and frankly they are doing a pretty good job of it. I think what the DNC is trying to do is foment enough "Hate Bush" rhetoric within the country. In that case, the RATS could have put Hitler up and he would be a better selection than Bush.

However, this will backfire. I am just waiting for the implosion, the announcement of Kerry's cancer relapse and the draft _______ movement to kick in.

To federal,

First, thank you for your service. Second, I agree with you that men who served honorably should have the opportunity of having their voices heard, especially when they speak the truth and that truth exposes a fraud like John Kerry.

Some of my friends have argued that the Swiftvets may hurt President Bush's chances for re-election. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I think on some things it is important to put principle above tactics.

Maybe I'm not nuanced enough to know if the Swiftvets help or hurt W. I do know that having someone who lied about his service and his phony heroics deserves to be exposed. It's a matter of justice...and honor.

I know the concept of honor seems to be on the verge of extinction, otherwise how could we get to a point that half my fellow Americans would even consider electing that disgrace, Kerry, to be President. Let's face it, he's a sham in every way.

Let's fight dishonor with the truth, and let's keep the pressure on the media to demand answers from Kerry, and to hold him to a higher standard of veracity than what they have accepted so far.

Federal, I thank you for your service. I also brim with pride at the Swiftvets, who not only risked their lives to fight for us in 'Nam, but who are also continuing to fight for their country today. I hope they'll be an example to all of us. I sent them a hundred bucks. I wasn't sure if I could afford it--but I knew I couldn't afford NOT to send it. -OhMike

Wow! I did not know this. That could be really explosive and make the purple heart thing look like a walk in the park!

Actualy, Corsi's comments are what many Americans agree with quietly.. so, not much damage here for repeating it... Interesting though that the Kerry insanes are making pleas of sanity.
