Washington -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger turned up the rhetoric against San Francisco's move to allow same-sex marriages, saying on national TV Sunday that he fears outbreaks of serious civil unrest if the ceremonies continue at City Hall.

Schwarzenegger said on NBC's "Meet the Press'' that he fears worsening protests about the divisive issue and worries the situation could get out of hand if courts don't quickly stop the marriages, which are being performed in defiance of existing state law.

Report From City Hall:

I was just there a few minutes ago (7:40 am). There were about 50 people lined up to go in. LEO's were at the front of the line.

Across the street in the park were Fred Phelps people protesting.

I talked to one of them, told them I lived there and that I was against this and so were other San Franciscans. Then this happened:

An older well dressed female told them "You ought to be ashamed of yourselves". I retorted "Why, the mayor is flouting the law."

A gay bald headed short guy in his 40's was screaming at them "You don't belong here, you don't live here, get the f*ck out of here!", then was phoning people on his cell phone.

I left quickly. I work for the gov't I can't afford to be seen as a Republican here. They WILL fire me for that.

Har, equating gay marriage with assault rifles. That'll make a liberal's head explode.

There is nothing wrong with what Arnold says

I disagree. Even if 100% true this is not what a Governor should be saying. Especially after only one rebuff from the Attorney General.

Wow! It sounds like Schwarzenegger is sounding more like a real Catholic than a CINO (Catholic in name only)!

Thanks for the report. If I wasn't so busy I'd drive up there and video tape some of this. And I'm sad to see the GHF group has made an appearance - that's not going to help and may result in a riot.

Sans children, marriage is a vacant institution.

Couples who are infertile would not agree with you that their marriage is vacant.

I never suggested such.
What I was stipulating was that marriage, as an institution {not on the personal level} has no use to society, if children are removed from the equation.

...only to have them later become annulled, have witlessly (I hope) abetted the full blown riot likely to result....

If the sexualy confused throw a tantrum then It's on them.

We have the Law and the Law Enforcement on our side.

GHF's is actually being peaceful and not saying a thing, just holding up their "usual" signs. It's the other side (ie, gays) that are spouting and screaming hateful rhetoric.

Thank you for giving us a personal account. Please keep us posted, if you can (that is, without giving your employers an excuse to fire their one Republican!).

I am a bit worried about today. I can't say why...but it's the energy or something.

I think Gavin will have these marriages continue, and I don't know what the Governor will do. Or the A.G....

I'm checking sfgate.com every few minutes.

Forgot one thing in my report:

News media was out there. Not in force yet (it was 7:40 am), but they were out there and rolling cameras.

Thanks - I think those signs aren't going to help, though. I've been on the receiving end of verbal assaults from homosexuals and have seen their hatred for any who disagree with them. This can't be a good combination.

I, too, am worried more today than last week. Kinda/sorta wish I was there to see this in person... I think.

We have the Law and the Law Enforcement on our side.

Not in San Francisco. They remember White Night just like the gays do. That was a real battle. To one side, it's just a job, to the other, it's life and death. The cops know it and don't want it. This could get really ugly. It may take troops.

And if the gays get their way, I'm afraid we may see a more open attack through hate crime legislation and discrimination laws at churches and Christianity. Maybe they would go to a church and insist on being married there and if the priest/pastor/minister says it's against their religion, sue them for discrimination.

Then they'll get the ACLU involved and start a movement to change tax exemptions for churches . . . and on and on and on.

How did such a small minority get so much power. They must be getting big bucks to be able to mount such a high profile in schools, society, culture.

There's tension in the air. It's very similar to when Gore also wanted activist courts to place him in office as the President because again, the rule of law did not apply to him. Gavin Newsom feels the same way.

Many many gay men ARE in places of power, high management, etc. Many HR departments are filled with gay men.

Many non-profits (including Catholic ones) are filled with gay men.

They have a lot of money.
