Since its inception, Free Republic has been the world's premeire online gathering place for the discussion of the news, issues, opinions, and just about everything else.
There have been several times when the members of Free Republic have posted important breaking news stories first, scooping the outlets of the mainstream media.
Some exemplary threads merit mention in what I'd like to call the Free Republic Hall of Fame Threads.
I believe this is a good way to remember and share some of the most important discussions that have occured on Free Republic.

Yes it really is, Momaw. If you notice, some of the participants in that thread never believed anything like that could happen. Did any of us, then? No. We sure were naive.

Thanks for that DonMorgan thread.
Boy....would some of the newbies be shocked at what the argument was about...and what positions were held, LOL!
I was also pleasantly surprised that most of the posters (sans Don, of course) are still here and active.

( I hope the Democrats keep listening to the Clintons. So far, it's been great for us.)

The "Situation Room" threads in the first 3 weeks of the war last spring were really amazing -- especially the tanks rolling into Baghdad and of course Baghdad Bob. And Bob Arnot helping the Iraqi civilians. Then there was the night the CNN guy decided to try to go into Tikrit alone and ended up in a car chase shoot-'em-up, which was gripping. Some of us couldn't even stand to watch on the TV, as the crew came really close to buying the farm -- we just got the updates here.
Sharing the war news with everyone here on FR was truly memorable.

Another good thread that comes to mind, and shows FR at its best, was the return of the Soyuz capsule earlier this year -- it was *lost* for a few hours, having landed hundreds of miles off course, but about the only place you'd know that info was here on FR, where NASA was being monitored -- it was a Saturday night and all the cable news stations said the capsule had landed safely when that was *not* known to be the case, then went back to their pre-recorded late Saturday programming.

I was always partial to the PLEASE! STOP POSTING SAME MESSAGE ON ALL BOARDS! thread (loved the keywords) though the funniest title was CAN DUCT TAPE FIX BULLET HOLES IN TV?
And the great FR Scoop on MARCO MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE [FR Scoop at Post 25].
