The moles want gold!
Two nitwit nightcrawlers — including a particularly portly “mole person” — were busted Thursday for diving into a Manhattan manhole in a subterranean quest for precious metals, police and law-enforcement sources said.
Cops nabbed Kevin Rodriguez, 26, and Samuel Reveron, 25 – both Venezuelan citizens – near their Queens homes in connection to a surreal pre-dawn Wednesday sewer escapade just steps from the Loews Regency New York on the Upper East Side.
The strange shenanigans could end up shedding light on the motivations of mysterious “mole people” spotted popping out of sewers — as Reveron admitted to fishing for gold in the city’s steamy depths, prosecutors said.
“We go into the sewers to look for valuables that go into the sewer drains,” he allegedly told a police officer, according to prosecutors.
Reveron and his accused compatriot — the jumbo-sized sewer spelunker Rodriguez — were arraigned Friday on trespass and conspiracy charges in Manhattan court.
Both were granted supervised release.
A federal law-enforcement source briefed on the matter said that neither suspect appeared to have had malicious intent or posed any threat to the dignitaries staying at the hotel, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in town for the UN General Assembly.
Both are part of a larger pattern across the city where spelunkers search for precious metals below ground, the source said.

I worked in Roads and Drainage division of Public Works for a few years. The Sewer Inspectors found all kinds of good stuff. Manny diamond rings and other jewelry.
To quote Tom Lehrer, “Life is like a sewer. What you get out of it, depends on what you put into it.”

In Omaha, the Feds came up with an unfunded mandate to split them. Added $50 a month to people’s monthly sewer bill.
I have known two women who lost 20,000+ diamond rings down drains and never got them back they searched the clean out traps.
Gold and other dense metals will naturally collect in the low velocity pockets of a running water system you don’t even need metal detectors just a basic understanding of flow regimes and gravity.
This holds true in nature too as the places to look for gold in placer mining is well placer deposits of sediment the gold will be the last sediments washed out of a flume.
I would expect in a city the size of NYC and in the wealthy Manhattan borough jewelry would be packed into the low velocity pockets just outside a hotels outfall into the combined see sewage system. So yeah where they’re looking is precisely where any jewelry that went down a hotel drain would naturally end up its not a bad idea for recovery of diamond rings which soap loosens up and boom down the drain it goes. Happens VERY often.

Well - about 60% of their system is like that, so under heavy conditions, untreated sewage is dumped into waterways.

All too common on what were once the “most modern” cities is the vast underground networking pieced together over the decades. It is incredibly expensive to repair/modify these systems so nothing gets done until disaster hits - then they make excuses because fixing the problem would break them. Then the extra construction covers most of the available ground with concrete so water can’t be absorbed and, presto - they become prone to sewerage spills and “Climate Change” caused, unprecedent flooding - dontyaknow.
It’s all fun and games until you run into Pennywise
