Many of us have them in our homes and at offices — but a neuroscientist warns that one household staple may be a major threat to our health.
Glen Jeffery, a professor of neuroscience at University College London, is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “clear and present public health emergency” that no one seems to be talking about.
He has gone so far as to compare the item to asbestos — once widely used in building materials before people realized it can cause issues like mesothelioma and lung cancer.
The health threat? Energy-efficient light-emitting diode bulbs, which are present in schools, offices, hospitals and nearly half of US households — and which Jeffrey claims could raise the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
“LED lighting is damaging mitochondria and therefore there is no question you’re damaging systemic health,” Jeffrey told The European. “This is a clear and present public health emergency and we need to take action.”
One study found that daily exposure to short-wavelength blue light reduced measures of mitochondrial activity by about 50% in mice. Another study found that exposure to blue-enriched LED lighting altered activity, metabolism and liver function in mice.

Rough service bulbs last longer too.
Yup....thicker filaments.
We buy the ones made in USA.
Surely everyone likes LED flashlights and lanterns and all the led battery operated motion sensor lights for dark closets and solar yard lights and so on?
Incandescents put out more light in the red spectrum which has health benefits. Google ‘red light therapy’
It was the white led that was the breakthrough for the general public use like flashlights, and those took a while to make it into quality light bulbs.
Change the color to a more yellow shade like the incandescent spectrum with the little switchy thing they have sitting on the light somewhere.. problem solved.
I don’t think they have mercury as they are Diodes, like little electronic faucets. but mostly you can change the colors on them to match the yellow spectrum like the incandescent bulbs. The old florescent lights had issues as well due the emitting spectrum.
And sunlight is very dangerous. Better hide in the basement with the lights out. Don’t tell the football guys their TV’s have a bunch of the evil LEDs in them./s
Great we just build a new house with industrial quality LED fixtures>>> Just change the colors to a more yellow/amber spectrum.
This sounds like more crap to me. First, many LED bulbs have all kinds of different color temps. Sounds like he’s pickign the worst one to do a study with. >>. Yes you caught that and then there is sunlight . One of the nice features of these LED’s is that you can change the colors. And then there is the big bad LED TV and computer monitors. Heaven forbid we are all gonna die.
I believe it was the CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) which had the mercury. Today’s LEDs imo are quite safe and energy efficient. The lack of red light (high IR) is easily addressed with ‘amber’ LED lights, aka warm and also a straight up red LED light. I have a red LED bulb on the night side table for if I’m blahhh or need to reset my bio rythm. Lighton/Lightoff.
SHHHH!
Population reduction!!!
I have used energy saving light bulbs since 1998. Still healthy as a race horse. I am sick of fear mongering for click baits.

LEDs causing health problems? No problem. Mother says, “Just wear a tin foil hat to deflect those wacky rays.”
When the old Fire Station was shut down and they moved to a new one, they created a special circuit and procedures to keep the bulb continuously powered during the removal, relocation and re-installation in order to avoid that thermal shock. I suspect they have it now on a circuit that has an uninterruptible power supply and backup power generation, which is something that a Fire Station would have anyway.
A question put to AI seems to seriously quell the anxiety raised by the alarming blue light effect on human diabetes and other mitochondrial health issues.
A study associated with Jeffery found that 420-nanometer light affected mitochondria in fruit flies, —but these findings do not prove that normal indoor LED lighting causes metabolic disorders in people.
For humans, the best-established effects of excessive evening blue-rich light are circadian disruption and sleep suppression. Those effects could indirectly influence glucose regulation and metabolism, but that is different from proving that blue light directly damages mitochondria throughout the body.
Practical steps are simple: use brighter, daylight-like light during the day; dim lights in the evening; avoid staring at bright screens close to bedtime; and use warmer, lower-intensity bulbs at night. There is no strong reason to avoid normal LED lighting during daytime, and blue-light glasses have not been shown to prevent diabetes or broadly protect mitochondria.
Sunlight is rich in blue and violet light. Do similar problems occur in outdoorsy types?
