A decade ago, a computer did something that no human would have done. It was considered a breakthrough for AI. Now the world is full of them.
The first glimmer of our AI future revealed itself a decade ago in the form of a single black stone.
It happened during a historic match between one of the world’s best Go players and AlphaGo, a computer program developed by Google’s DeepMind lab to conquer this ancient board game. The artificial-intelligence system stunned everyone by winning their opening showdown. In their next encounter, with millions of people watching online all over the world, Lee Sedol took a midgame smoke break to calm his nerves.
When he came back, he looked at the 37th move. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
Go, like chess, is a strategy game with black and white pieces that unfolds one move at a time. As he stared at the black stone that AlphaGo dropped on the board, Lee saw a move that no professional Go player would have made. In fact, the DeepMind team calculated the chances of a human playing it at one in 10,000.
The novel move was so unconventional and counterintuitive that nobody could be sure what to make of it. At first, commentators believed it was a strategic blunder. They soon realized it was a masterstroke.
“This move,” Lee said, “made me think about Go in a new light.”
Ten years after that illuminating Move 37, the entire world is suddenly beginning to feel like one massive Go board.
There have been so many recent AI breakthroughs that remind me of Move 37 that I called Google DeepMind co-founder...

AI will be smarter tomorrow.
And the day after.
And the day after that.

AI doesn’t even know what it’s doing.
At its most basic level, GenAI takes a prompt and assigns each word (technically tokens) a meaning and a ranking of the attention/relative importance. From there, this analysis is bounced against giant a correlation matrix of the probability of one word following another word. The model then generates a response on a word by word (token by token) basis, where the next word is based on the previous word.
This is a gross oversimplification. But it’s largely true.
Ergo, you’re right. The bot doesn’t know what it’s doing.
A 747 doesn’t know what it’s doing. An atomic bomb doesn’t know what it’s doing.
These things still transform the world.
AI doesn’t have to “know” anything.
It can still do the jobs that a lot of humans do.
I’m arguing with the description ‘smart’.
It does stuff; some of it very useful. But it’s not ‘smart’, and doing stuff doesn’t indicate ‘intelligence’.
Which makes the whole AI "conscienceness" issue moot.

I agree with you. You are 100% right. AI isn’t smart and doesn’t know anything.
Will you agree with my position that advanced logic processing (also known as AI) will kick a big percentage of humans out of the national workforce within 5-10 years?

I doubt it. Humans will still be needed to run and maintain it. We’ll just learn new skills and do new jobs, as we’ve done with every other technological advancement.
And boost our electricity rates higher. While I have no use for AI as a retired person.
Only thing you need to understand women is to know that women only want to impress other women.
"Smart" doesn't mean squat.
Look at all the "Educated" liberals. Are they smart?
Masters, PHDs abound - and they're all dumber than dirt.
