The paper, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, notes that the fertility rate in the U.S. has fallen by 22 per cent since 2007, when the first iPhone went on sale in the country...
Until 2011, the iPhone was only available in the U.S. to subscribers of AT&T, allowing the researchers to compare birth rates in counties with near-universal AT&T coverage to counties with little or none in the four years since the first iPhone’s release.
Their findings suggest a striking relationship between iPhone access and declining birth rates...
As for why exactly this is, the researchers present three candidates. iPhone use reduces in-person interactions, provides more access to information about contraception and abortion, and provides more access to pornography.
Essentially, the smartphone is an unofficial form of contraceptive...
Another study, published in the scientific journal Child Development, found that fewer adolescents in recent years engaged in adult activities such as having sex, dating, drinking alcohol, working for pay, going out without their parents, and driving, and suggested a link to increased Internet use...

...and some had cucumbers and/or eggplants.
For other things they have their neighbors - the Amish-ish; Mennonites. They have cars.
I blame kickers on CB’s.
Try the goat ones.
Down at the pool yesterday, a pretty 25 year old tanning herself. Gazing at her phone of course.
I have a decent Samsung phone. I rarely use it for internet. I use laptops, desktop and LED monitors for this. Never in a million years would I do banking n financials from tiny screen smart phone.
Actually the Amish have decried technology that keeps people from interacting in person for decades. And they refuse to use certain types of tools. Many had refused EFT because it separated a worker from the concrete fruits of his labor and the relationships they have with their postal carrier and their bank tellers. The discussions about relationships and their importance is what initially drew me to conservative Anabaptism.
Tool is a slimy word. It supposedly justifies everything.
You know pornography ... that tool for a more quick and effective orgasm.
Marijuana ... that tool that helps people sleep... so it is legalized.
Surrogates mothers ... that tool so childless adults can have children.
Tools whose true impact is hidden.
Do they use it like an IUD?
Even the Amish now allow telephones on their properties,
//////
on my grandfather’s farm in central Pennsylvania, a phone was set up in the milkshed so the amish could come by and make phone calls.
not sure that has changed. have you seen amish make phone calls on their own property?
They sometimes have phones in outbuildings on their farms.
A misconception is that the Amish are against all modern technology on principle; but except for the very strict orders, they generally are not. They analyze each technology for the negative impact it may have on their faith and family lives. For many, a phone in an outbuilding instead of in the house is an acceptable compromise; just as riding in someone’s car can be acceptable, but owning one’s own may not be.
