A new kind of birth control: iPhones could be to blame for declining fertility, says study
The Province ^ | Monday June 8, 2026 | Ellie Hutchings

Posted on 06/08/2026 6:02:55 PM PDT by canuck_conservative

The paper, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, notes that the fertility rate in the U.S. has fallen by 22 per cent since 2007, when the first iPhone went on sale in the country...

Until 2011, the iPhone was only available in the U.S. to subscribers of AT&T, allowing the researchers to compare birth rates in counties with near-universal AT&T coverage to counties with little or none in the four years since the first iPhone’s release.

Their findings suggest a striking relationship between iPhone access and declining birth rates...

As for why exactly this is, the researchers present three candidates. iPhone use reduces in-person interactions, provides more access to information about contraception and abortion, and provides more access to pornography.

Essentially, the smartphone is an unofficial form of contraceptive...

Another study, published in the scientific journal Child Development, found that fewer adolescents in recent years engaged in adult activities such as having sex, dating, drinking alcohol, working for pay, going out without their parents, and driving, and suggested a link to increased Internet use...

It’s not just the media. Don’t leave out the absolute MESS politicians have made of our economic and social environment.

“”””” found that fewer adolescents in recent years engaged in adult activities such as having sex, dating, drinking alcohol, working for pay, going out without their parents, and driving”””””

Emotional, shallow, and passionate about their simple opinions and they get deeply hostile and emotional in conversation if it gets complicated or confusing to them, they don’t really accept that people are not clones of their own personal bubble set of humans such as mom and agreeable clerks and their texting group.

Physically weak and untested but emotionally volatile and hyper sensitive.

I really thought the cause would be the body piercings, tats and hair dyes of some females.

Nature’s way of saying; Do not touch.

Maybe the tattoos, piercings, etc., are a response to the crudeness and irresponsibility that the ‘sexual revolution’ inspired in so many men.

Men are not innocent in what has happened between the sexes. The way some men act would incline young women to expect that they might be all the same, and to definitely put out ‘do not touch’ signals.

I'm 82. I refuse to get one. If I'm out and about, I'm on MY TIME...It's not like I'm going to be gone all day....it's a trip to the dumpster and a couple stores...and maybe the bank.

I'm 72 and I can't imagine life without my iPhone. If I need something, I use it to order from Amazon instead of going to the store. If I need to deposit a check I use remote deposit instead of going to the bank. I get real time alerts from my credit card company which means I can be alerted to a fraudulent charge as it happens. I can set the temperature in my house by accessing the thermostat, meaning I come home to a warm house. I can open my garage door from anywhere in the world, which came in handy when my wife lost her key. All my appointments and reminders are stored in my calendar app. I can take pictures and videos. If I'm out of cell phone range I can use the SOS feature and text someone via satellite. There are a lot more reasons to have a smart phone. You can even make a telephone call with one!

'You can even make a telephone call with one!'

LOL! As I've become an old lady (same age as you) I've marvelled at the improvements technology has brought to old age.

From the article: ...the fertility rate in the U.S. has fallen by 22 per cent since 2007, when the first iPhone went on sale in the country...

2007 was the 2nd Great Depression.

Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) started in the early 2000s as well.

???

The "sexual revolution" was in the 1960s. This drop in births started in the early 2000s.

Men haven't changed. Women did.

Feminism didn't free women from the oppression they were told they were under, it freed men from the oppression they didn't know they were under.

After generations of lies and indoctrination through government education and the Propaganda Media, social media showed men just how badly they were being screwed. Once women went online and showed their true selves, men starting walking away.

There it is, right there in black and white - the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The power brokers didn't care about how bad people were getting screwed, but their global program of replacing white men with foreign invaders hit a snag because the "magic dirt" of Western countries doesn't help invaders run the machines needed to keep it going.

The power brokers need the birthrate to increase in order for tax and debt slaves to keep the power brokers' investments going.

I have only seen men get worse, since the 1960s. They took the supposed ‘freedom’ of birth control and ran with it. They expected women to put out on the first date, still do, and they were not interested in a woman who expected them to wait until marriage. There were plenty of willing women, so they could just move on to the next.

Most haven’t backed off from that.

How not to be in the flesh connected to humans.

You make the case of why devices severely diminish human interaction. Ergo diminish family formation.

That’s nonsense. A cell phone is merely a tool.

You may as well say that the invention of the telephone itself diminished human interaction, though I’m sure you’ve got one in your home. Why go to the barber shop or the general store for ‘news’, when you had a telephone in the house?

Even the Amish now allow telephones on their properties, if not actually in their houses. They recognize that it’s a useful tool.

I think a lot of people are developing an irrational fear of technology, even though everyone alive today has been an avid user of it all of their lives.

Technology is becoming a scapegoat for something that is actually lacking in OURSELVES.

Q: Could carrying the smartphone all day in the pocket of trousers near the testicles affect a man’s fertility?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carrying a smartphone in a trouser pocket near the testicles may negatively affect male fertility, primarily through two mechanisms: heat exposure and radiofrequency (RF) radiation.
<<>> Primary Mechanisms of Harm
1. Thermal Effects (Heat)
The testes require a temperature slightly lower than the body’s core temperature for optimal sperm production. Keeping a phone in a pocket can raise scrotal temperature by more than 2°C, leading to:
Reduced sperm production rates.
Decreased sperm viability and increased cell death.
Impaired sperm motility.
2. Radiofrequency Radiation (Non-Thermal Effects)
Although RF radiation from phones is non-ionizing, studies suggest it can induce oxidative stress in reproductive tissues. This process generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage sperm cells, resulting in:
Lower sperm count and motility: Meta-analyses of experimental studies indicate a detrimental effect on sperm movement and survival.
DNA fragmentation: Damage to sperm DNA can reduce fertilization potential and increase miscarriage risk.
Hormonal disruption: Some animal studies show reduced testosterone levels and alterations in Leydig cell function.
<<>> Scientific Consensus and Limitations
While animal studies and in vitro experiments consistently show adverse effects on sperm parameters (count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity), evidence from large-scale human studies remains less definitive.
Experts note that while the risk from radiation alone is debated, the cumulative effect of heat and radiation, combined with other lifestyle factors, poses a plausible threat to fertility over time.
