The Victory Garden Thread - June, 2026
June 1, 2026 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/01/2026 6:10:43 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Victory Garden Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Victory Garden Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Guess what I get to do this morning? Replant every ONE of the TWENTY-THREE tomatoes we planted, yesterday! Yep. Raccoons.

A dog is being tied out in the garden tonight! Grrrrr!

And we had our planting system down to a science, and we thought a good, deep watering would tamp down any bone meal scent, but I guess not. Double Grrrr!

I’ll see ya all later. Hoping my ANGER will keep me motivated and I can make quick work of a two-hour job! Triple Grrrrr!

I’m moving this month to a new property I’ve been preparing for about 2 years. Planted and succeeding so far are:

Apples
Plum
Pears
Fig
Garlic
Peas
Fava beans
Rhubarb
Blueberries
Raspberries
Strawberries
Potatoes (in deference to Dan Quayle)
Rosemary
Tarragon
Thyme
Szechuan Pepper
Japanese Pepper

Just trying to get there often enough to keep them watered!

Oh, no! Good luck on the success of the re-plantings! Ny attempt to restore my strongest Better Boy eventually failed - more on that later as:

A) We have potentially severe weather happenin’.

B) I gotta make some breakfast!

Hopefully everyone’s June goes well!!! (Better!)

I had to give up on the bone meal.
Basil refused to germinate or was earwigged. I planted some indoors along with lemon pepper seeds. Early girls, cucumbers and squash are in the ground and volunteer tomatoes are thriving.

I don’t garden, but it seems odd to have Corn on the Cob day in June...

Gee, I get upset if one or two plants get dug up.

23??

I’d be well past deterrence, at that point!

We have warm, soon hot weather settling in - which means hot winds - I have been replacing a lot of my landscaping plants with succulents.

I don't have a lot of time today b/c I'm having cataract surgery in a few hours - looking forward to getting my vision back!!

I can't put water in any of my bird baths b/c of the mosquito problem, so I use fire glass instead. Also, a succulent bowl ready to be planted:

Hoping for another Dodger World Series win this year!

This very odd orange mandevilla hasn't stopped blooming since I got it off the $1 table at Lowe's two years ago:

Happy Gardening to All!!

Huh, Paducah NWS seems to be ho-humming the storms, but Memphis NWS has issued an unusually wide severe t-storm warning for the TN Counties to the south of Paducah. Granted that area is in the Memphis or Nashville CWA’s, not Paducah, but, at least 2/3 of that area is closer to Paducah than to Memphis.

Good luck to anyone affected - hopefully these will die back to just heavy rain. (We missed most of that, but did pick up a bit over 1/2” of rain, split pretty evenly between earlier precip. and this latest round - which sure looked more impressive on radar. Showers are ongoing, so we might end up with 2/3” total. That would be helpful, at least, and I won’t have to water anything outside, today. :-)

Our area Wally Worlds have been having corn on the cob discounted to 33 cents an ear the last several days. Source = ? Mexico, maybe?

Our showers look to be ending very soon, but it’s going to take a while to dry off. I do have a couple lights to fix out in my shop storage area... (Hopefully, the ballasts are not out and I can just replace the FL bulbs, this time with LED replacements.)

My brother had the same problem - we can back from vacation and his entire garden was dug up - he thinks it was possums, but I believe it was skunks.

He’s going to try to put up a varmit-proof fence - good luck with that! I’ve fought gophers for decades in So Cal - and so far the gophers are winning.

I feel your pain. One year I came out to survey my new plants and they were all neatly bitten off about 2 inches above the soil. Deer. 😤

I guess I’m living in the past, when we largely only had things in local season. (And all of it was a lot better, too - you could still get supermarket tomatoes as good as from a farm stand.)

And don’t get me started on what they’ve done to meats :-)

Wow - all 23! I would not be handling that situation very well, but I know you will ‘soldier’ on :-)

Question on tomatoes. Is there any advantage to clipping or topping tomatoes over so high? My plants are strong and thick (not thin spindly) but they are getting quite tall. I have normal amount of blooms and tomatoes. I hate to fix so things if it’s not broke. Your thoughts?
