Former CDC director on Ebola outbreak: ‘I suspect this is going to become a very significant pandemic’

Former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield said Wednesday he suspects the spreading Ebola outbreak in Africa will spread across three new countries and become a “very significant pandemic.”

“I suspect this is going to become a very significant pandemic, probably going to leak into Tanzania, leak into southern Sudan, maybe leak into Rwanda,” Redfield said during an appearance on NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”

“So, it’s going to be very disruptive,” he added.

A majority of the Ebola cases are in Congo and Uganda.

Local health officials in the two nations reported 536 suspected cases, 105 probable cases, 34 confirmed cases and around 134 suspected deaths from the outbreak, according to the CDC.

“This is an outbreak right now that is really a significant outbreak that’s of significant public health international concern, partially because what you said, it wasn’t recognized very quickly. I’m not sure why,” Redfield told anchor Elizabeth Vargas.

“Normally when we have these Ebola outbreaks, and I had three of them when I was CDC director, all of which were in the DRC, normally we recognize them when we have five, 10 cases, you know, at most,” he continued. “This one really wasn’t picked up until there was over 100 cases.”

The former CDC director added, “As you said, now there’s over 500 cases. There’s close to 150 deaths already, and it’s moving very rapidly.”

The May outbreak marks the 17th outbreak of Ebola in the region within the past 50 years, and officials said the most recent outbreak ended last December, the CDC noted.

One American worker reportedly came in contact with the virus while working in Congo and was transported to Germany for treatment.

On Thursday, the State Department issued a travel advisory requiring that all U.S.-bound American citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been in Congo, Uganda or South Sudan within 21 days of arrival in the U.S. go through “enhanced public health screening” carried out by the CDC and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Travelers who have been to African countries with reports of Ebola outbreaks within the last three weeks must complete the enhanced screening at Washington Dulles International Airport.

I understand what you’re saying but with the CDC their pronouncements are self fulfilling. They just make sure that’s how it is!

It does (or can kill people fast) but it also has an incubation period where people can be carrying it and not know they have it, which can lead to spreading. And I’ve read different things about it’s ability to be spread. I’ve read it can’t be transmitted through air but can be if it is encapsulated in a droplet of mucous or saliva from a cough or sneeze. Contact with an infected person’s sweat may also transmit. Just what I’ve read.

This is Covid 2.0, designed to paralyze Trump administration, exactly how they did it in 2020.

Oh I remember him from one of the COVID Panels.
He was the big, bald guy with glasses.
Not nearly as chatty or preachy as the Scarf Lady.

The current Ebola outbreak is supposedly caused by something called the Bundibugyo virus which has a longer incubation period.

But at least there is a Patent on the virus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundibugyo_ebolavirus#Patent

“Ebola kills people fast. That prevents it from spreading far. “

Wrong. Ebola has a 8-10 day incubation period which is plenty of time to get far and wide. The get symptoms to death time is 48-72 ish hours.

I have personally made it from Eastern DRC (geologist for cobalt) to DFW in 30 hours via airstrip cut into jungle > Kisangani> Kinshasa> Paris > DFW

One of the few times ever on an Antonov twin prop. Ah Soviet engineering.

So yeah during that exposure to symptomatic period Ebola can travel far and wide.

Houston and Atlanta are getting thousands of FIFA fans for the cup next month. There is a 21 day travel ban and visa hold for anyone who has been in the DRC or Uganda in the prior 21 days prior to their arrival but this only applies to noncitizens , dual citizens can come in and only need a temperature screening and a questionnaire filled out with CBP. Yeah that’s gonna work well. Tylenol worked for the last guy to fly to DFW in 2014 to get past the temp scanners he knew he was sick and wanted to come here for the best and free treatment.

So no you are flat out wrong. 8 day is plenty of time to make it to any corner of the world from Eastern Congo. Once cases start popping up in Kinshasa every American city is only Paris, UAE(Dubai) and Turkey(Istanbul) away via direct flights to those hubs.

Right on schedule every 10 years or so there’s a new Ebola scare. And/or Hanta virus.

Thanks for running the numbers. The obvious solution is nobody from Ebola regions without that 21 day quarantine period. Dual citizenship or not. Frankly I’d keep Africans out period. They tend to ruin countries that take immigrants from there.
