62-foot ‘kraken-like’ octopus identified as ‘top-tier predator’ 100M years ago — with powerful, bone-crushing bite: scientists

It was more than it was Kraken-ed up to be.

An octopus the size of the Hollywood Sign might seem like a monster from Greek mythology.

However, new fossil evidence reveals that massive “kraken”-like cephalopods ruled the seas during the Cretaceous period, possibly preying on massive sea reptiles and other so-called apex predators, per a study published Thursday in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

This massive mollusk “had among the largest body sizes of all organisms in the Cretaceous oceans,” wrote the researchers, who hailed from Hokkaido University.

Indeed, at 62-feet-long, this colossal octopus could grow up to six feet longer than the mighty mosasaur, a predatory marine reptile that has long been considered the oceanic alpha-dog in the late Cretaceous between 100 and 60 million years ago.

In the movie “Jurassic World,” this nautical night terror notably dispatches the evil Indominus Rex — essentially a hybrid of the fiercest dinosaurs.

In fact, not only was the octopus bigger, but it was potentially badder as it might’ve even preyed on the aforementioned leviathan.

This ran contrary to previous scholarship that large vertebrates such as the latter dominated the ocean while invertebrates were their prey.

A Fabled Warning from fathoms below:
Many of these super sized Octopuses like to ‘make friends’ with Fishermen, by casually extending a tentacle in your direction, hoping to ‘shake hands’ with you. It’s a trap.

Do Not ever Shake Hands with a Kraken-like Octopus.
That would be your worst mistake!
60 seconds later, only your now empty size 12 Doc Martens will remain on the fantail. ///

Maybe.

Or maybe they are still down there.

Lurking.

Waiting.

Plotting.

Or, also possible, someone found a fossil beak and compared it to the size of a beak from a regular octopus and went "Yikes! Here be BIG monsters."

Ether way the octopus is a freaky deeky beast and they creep me out.

I with you, that they could still have still been around when humans first went out on the seas in boats.

Thing is, octopi have very short life spans.

Mmmmm! I’m a sucker for a good octopus meal!

Hey, did you hear about the two octopii that got married? They walked down the aisle arm in arm! In arm in arm in arm in arm.

I saw the one that attacked the Nautilus way back in 1954 or so. It took some work, but Kirk Douglas sorted it out.

Per the movie, what bit and dragged the Indominous Rex into the water was not a giant octopus but a gigantic shark creature, like what was shown in the movie The Meg.
