Trump: Energy Secretary Wright 'totally wrong' on delayed return to $3 gas
Fox Business ^ | Apr 20, 2026 | Eric Mack

President Donald Trump pushed back Monday on his own energy secretary's claim that a return to $3-a-gallon gas will not come through the end of the year.

"No, I think he’s wrong on that, totally wrong," Trump told The Hill on Monday, when asked about Energy Secretary's Christopher Wright's interview with CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Trump remains steadfast in his conviction that gas prices in America are going to drop precipitously "as soon as this ends," referring to the oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz...

"The blockade is very powerful, very strong," Trump added to The Hill, pointing at Iran's obstruction effort. "They lose $500 million a day with the blockade up. We control it. They don’t control it."

Wright's comments were not all that unaligned with Trump's position, but Wright was a bit less convicted on prices on when gas might drop below $3 again.

"I don't know, that could happen later this year, that might not happen until next year, but prices have likely peaked and they will start going down," Wright told CNN's Jake Tapper, who asked further that gas "might not be under $3 a gallon until 2027?"

"Certainly, with a resolution of this conflict, you will see prices go down," Wright added. "Prices across the board on energy prices will go down."

We pay $1.80 in gas tax alone here in Commiefornia which will make it hard for the national average to get to 3 dollars but plenty of individual states will see 3 dollar gas.

What goes up... Rarely ever comes down, especially since Covid.

Gouging became such a common place practice during and after Covid, that most retailers just can’t help themselves. They are making much higher profits and nobody holds them to account.

Exactly. I'm OK with it as long a Iran is completely zeroed out. Kaput:

Careful with that.

I’ve lost a lot of friends by pointing this out. I say “this isn’t capitalism anymore”. It’s just gouging.

And further in my own statement is that the “boss class” is shamelessly fleecing the working class.

And from there my friends look at me like I sprouted a bushy moustache.

Delivering for the gigs during COVID I saw every single business buying personal luxury goods while telling their existing employees they needed to tighten their belt. I hear the media about how employees are quiet quitting and the like ... I get it.

Apparently... There have only been two times historically where the gap between the super wealthy and the poor was small enough to create a sustainable ‘middleclass’... The first time was the period just after the plague... The second time was after world war 2.

The days of a middleclass existence created by that extra wealth created during and after World War 2 are coming to an end.

In the not too distant future we will return to a more normalized economy like that of the 19th century... No middleclass. Rich man, poor man... no in-between man.

Can someone explain to me why it affected US gas prices at all?

We import no oil from Iran, it all goes to China, Japan, India, and South Korea. So I can see THEM paying more but why us?

I understand supply and demand but there is just as much supply as there ever was, and the war hasn’t diminished the number of refineries or the cost to operate them. Why cant OUR refineries continue to turn OUR oil into gasoline and if the situation in Iran raises the cost for those countries that depend on it, that’s their problem and they should pay more.

The middleclass was a worldwide economic phenomena... And not associated with any particular country. The middleclass is slowly disappearing for all of us... No matter where you live.

We still get 10% of oil from the ME. Oil is a global commodity. Higher prices across the world creates more bid everywhere. Why would domestic refineries sell here if they can sell at a higher price in Asia?

OK, sorta agree. But considering transportation cost would they really come out ahead?

Since the supply and demand are no different than before the war, it seems to me to be only a distribution channel disruption.

To illustrate my point, let’s take corn instead for an example. The United States imports negligible amounts of corn, importing only $27 worth million in February 2026, primarily from Canada and Turkey. So let’s say truck drivers in Turkey go on strike and no corn can be shipped.

In this scenario, it’s clear that Turkish users of corn would be impacted and prices would skyrocket but it would have no effect on US corn prices because we produce all the corn we need and have extra that we export. Turkey might have to pay a premium to get some of it but that would be their problem, not ours.

Yeah, no doubt. The premiums are around 10 bucks a barrel right now between WTI[us benchmark]$89.5 and Brent Crude[Asia] $98.
